Long Short Story: Before The Day is Done

The Races Need To Know Information!

Vampires

* Can be turned and passed down.

Description-

Vampires are un-dead immortals who feed and survive on the blood of a living.

Transitioning-

Humans who have consumed vampire blood and died within 42 hours of doing so will rise un-dead. The nature of the human's death is irrelevant however the body must be preserved and able to function. If the Vampire turn's the person by choice, they will most likely brake their neck or or block their airways. When the new vampire is awakened they will need blood right away, from either a human or a vampire.

Food-

Blood is the main component of a vampire's diet, whether it be animal or human. If vampires fail to drink blood, their bodies will become severely weak, and will ultimately disintegrate into mummification. Blood (especially human blood) will not only satisfy a vampire's thirst, but will also increase and their physical capabilities. The longer a vampire abstains from blood, the more likely the vampire will lose all sense of their humanity and rationality until they finally give into their blood lust. Due to their acute senses, a vampire can detect whether or not a human has recently consumed alcohol or drugs, because their blood tastes unclean and can leave a vampire with a nasty aftertaste. Through animal blood would keep a vampire alive, it will not make them as strong as they would be from drinking human blood, nor will it stop the burning in their throat. Human blood is the best option.

Nature-

Vampires themselves are extremely feral, predatory creatures, and far more savage and beast-like than their human appearance suggests. They growl, hiss, snarl, and curl their lips back baring their fangs as signs of aggression when provoked. When they sense danger, they will immediately evade the area or per pair for battle. 99% of Vampire population feed off of humans rather than animals.

The bite of a vampire can sever the limbs of both animals and humans, as vampires are known for having extremely sharp and strong teeth. Despite their nature, vampires are also capable of human emotions, such as compassion, love, and self-control. However the emotions of vampires are far more intense than the emotions of humans; anger, happiness, hate, love, etc. are more powerful and much more overwhelming than when they were human. Whenever a vampire is faced with a powerful feeling (such as hunger) their faces transform into a paler complexion, while the pupils from their eye's will expand into their iris's, making their eyes look black. Their canine teeth will lengthen into fangs, giving them a more predatory look to scare off or threaten their prey.

Vampire's also feel bonds to certain humans, which will cause them to either kill the human or keep them as a pet, or even turn them when they feel the time comes. When a human drink's their, blood, the bond get's stronger and the Vampire will be able to feel their emotions and if they are in pain and or danger. This bond means that they are their soul mate, and they end up together no matter what, unless the vampire kills the human, of course.

Werewolves

*Can be turned and passed down.

Description-

Not much is known about the history of werewolves except that they existed before vampires were created. Who created them, how they were created, when exactly they were created and the reason for their creation is currently unknown.

Psychological characteristics-

Werewolves are known to be aggressive, strong and fast even in human form. Those with the werewolf curse still latent can exhibit some supernatural traits which can be triggered by aggression, along with unusual physical strength for the person's given size and age but they cannot fully transform and they also black out they go blind with rage when provoked. Also werewolves have a higher body temperature than humans. This high temperature allows the werewolves to withstand very cold weather and makes it difficult for them to become overheated. It also makes it very difficult for vampires to harm them in combat, due to vampires being extremely sensitive to high temperatures. The wolves bear an animal scent that makes them unappetizing to vampires, making it easier for vampires to resist the temptation caused by their blood.

Food-

Like normal people, werewolves can eat normal food if they choose to. However, because they turn into ferocious beasts at will, they are flesh eating creatures. When they feed, it is absorbed throughout the body and they need to consume organs or body parts, but they do not have to feed in order to prolong their existence like Vampires. There is no known side effects in the absence of devouring victims in werewolf form. Werewolves have not been seen to attack each other in human or wolf form, but have been known to hunt both human and vampire prey while transformed until they joined sides with Vampires.

Code of Loyalty-

Werewolves are very similar to Witches when it comes to their own kind. Unlike the vampires, werewolves are more sworn to loyalty and may bond with other werewolves they meet. They work with each other as sort of an extended family. The bond of loyalty between werewolves is strangely strong, the only things they do not attack are other werewolves.

Appearance-

Werewolves in their wolf form have the appearances of an ordinary wolf, but with a much larger and brute-like appearance. The fur color of wolf forms differs from one to the other. Each wolf's distinctive color and characteristics correlates with each wolf's soul. No real explanation of this phenomenon is given; none, perhaps, should be sought for - variability is the one fundamental of living beings. The "monstrous size" of these creatures is emphasized repeatedly. As humans, they are between 6'0" and 7'0" tall, and after phasing become bigger, more muscular, and harder in look and substance. Their voices also deepen considerably. The wolves become similar in their human forms, partly due to their appearances (hard-muscled bodies, and unusual height) and the synchronization of their movements, so that they could be mistaken for biological siblings. While their skin is much more durable than that of a human being, it is not granite hard like a vampire's.

Werewolf Transformation-

The first transformation at the age of 17 is quite slow and the person is subjected to at least five hours of intense pain before transforming. After the first transformation it will get faster but still hurt. During the transformation, the body of the person is twisted in an unnatural manner as bones reshape and shift to form a wolf skeleton, causing the person immense pain. A werewolf changes at will, and turns back at will, unless they get wounded horribly. Older werewolves or more powerful werewolves can control themselves when angry and turn at will, faster than a less experienced being.

Pack Behavior-

In their wolf forms, pack members are telepathically linked with each other, enhancing their coordination during hunts and fights but allowing little or no privacy at any time. The Alphas of two different packs are able to communicate telepathically, and can control what thoughts they share, while the subordinates of different packs don't show this ability. The dominant male/female, the Alpha, can force the other pack members to obey his/her orders against their will. So can the Beta, though he/she can't command his/her own Alpha. Though implied, it is unknown whether this characteristic is also extended down the pack hierarchy. Alpha status is related to lineage, the born Alpha, having no interest in leading the pack. By having the rest of the pack agree to his/her decision, they can select a new candidate to lead the pack. Though possible, it is unclear whether a lower-ranking pack member can challenge the Alpha for status.

Powers/Abilities-

Alpha's Voice: A werewolf Alpha can use this on the other pack members to make them follow his orders willingly.(Only the alpha has of course)

Super Strength: Werewolves are much stronger than any human. They are not as strong as a vampire whilst in human form but when transformed they are at equal's with Vampires.

Telepathy: Werewolves can hear each other pack member's thoughts in wolf form, but only if those pack members are from the same pack.

Super Speed: Werewolves are extremely faster than any human and vampire or other supernatural beings other than Vampires. Werewolves can use this ability in either Human or wolf form.

Super Agility: Werewolves possess superhuman agility. They can move, jump, climb, and run incredibly fast without difficulty or exhaustion.

Super Senses: Werewolves have the extremely keen senses of smell, sight, taste, and hearing inherent in all canines, but not as strong as vampires.

Healing Factor: Werewolves possess superhuman regenerative abilities, meaning if ever injured, their bodies will heal near instantaneously. Werewolves have also been said to heal exactly as fast as vampires. Even in human form.

Shapeshifting: Willingly turn into wolves whenever they want or when they get angry.

Anger: When a Werewolf is furious, their anger increase all their powers and abilities for a short period of time, as well as can have an advantage over a Vampire.

Weaknesses-

Broken Neck: By breaking a werewolf's neck, it results in instant death. While their healing factor is identical to a vampire's, they are alive. Not un-dead.

Heart Extraction: If a werewolves heart is ripped out, it will cause instant death.

Decapitation: By removing the head of a werewolves, he dies.

Wolfs bane: Wolfs bane is an herb that which brought upon a werewolf, they will become weak and feverish.

On Basketball: Boeheim has changed and he hasn't

(AP) ? The old Jim Boeheim and his incredible 2-3 zone are on the way to another Final Four. The new Jim Boeheim and his more player-friendly attitude will be there as well.

Syracuse's 55-39 victory over Marquette on Saturday sent the Orange on to the Final Four for the fourth time under Boeheim, a man as synonymous with his school as the Carrier Dome and snow.

Like his career, the Final Four berths have spanned a long time: 1987, 1996, 2003 and 2013.

He's been involved with basketball at the central New York school since walking on to the team in 1962. On April 3, 1976, he became the head coach at his alma mater and just days short of 37 years later he is No. 2 on the all-time wins list ? and adding to his reputation as one of the best defensive coaches because of that 2-3 zone that he has so loyal to.

"Jim's a great coach. He understands this game and if you sit and talk with him, you'll see that," said Leo Rautins, who played for Boeheim from 1980-83 and whose son Andy played there from 2005-10. "That zone. It's amazing. If I was a coach today and the way people shoot the ball I'd play zone too. He's a genius. All his players love him and look at the way all his old players come back for him. You can't say enough about him."

The Syracuse sections in Verizon Center looked like the school's Hall of Fame had come to life. Derrick Coleman, Pearl Washington, Billy Owens, Sherman Douglas. They were all there and they were all ready to talk about Boeheim, who led the Orange to the national championship in 2003 behind a couple of freshmen named Carmelo Anthony and Gerry McNamara.

Most of his former players agreed there isn't a lot different about Boeheim as far as the game goes. There are some very different things about the man himself.

"He's mellow now, he used to scream, and cuss at us a lot," Coleman said with a big laugh.

"He's more calm now and doesn't scream as much. He used to be a screamer," Owens said, drawing laughs from a couple of former players "Right now he's calm and has all the confidence in the world. This and 900 wins. I can't be any happier for him."

Boeheim has always looked pretty much the same on the bench. He sits with his chin in right hand when things are going smoothly and he's up in a hurry if they're not with arms spread wide and a look on his face of pure disbelief. He's always been an easy target for those who say he's a whiner but Douglas, one of the best point guards to play in the Big East, has a play on words with that.

"I think we all mature," Douglas said. "I was there 20-some years ago. As Jim would say, 'Like wine, you get better with age.' He's looks good and is a little feisty at his age. I'm so proud of him."

The current players were asked if Boeheim had changed much in their years at Syracuse.

"He might have been more relaxed on me, I can tell you that after being here four years," said Brandon Triche, who had nine points and six rebounds against Marquette. "I still get yelled at every other play but at least it's every other play and not every play."

James Southerland, who led the Orange with 16 points, said there hasn't been all that much change.

"Coach yelled at me when we were up 30 against Montana, I can tell you that," he said. "I don't think coach is going to be relaxed until we win a championship, that's what I say."

At 68, Boeheim, who has had 35 20-win seasons, doesn't look like he's slowing down and he said as much this week when he confirmed he would be back to coach the Orange. He said that even though the school is leaving the Big East ? a conference Boeheim helped build up with fellow Hall of Fame coaches Jim Calhoun, John Thompson and Lou Carnesecca ? for the Atlantic Coast Conference. There, he will match wits with Hall of Famers Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski.

Krzyzewski is the only coach with more Division I wins than Boeheim: 957-920. He also has been the head coach, with Boeheim as an assistant, for the U.S. national teams that won the last two Olympic gold medals.

"Mike Krzyzewski and I have become close over the years and whenever we have been together sitting someplace talking about basketball or whatever, we always somehow in the conversation it always gets back to how lucky the two of us have been. Really," he said. "I was a walk-on at Syracuse 51 years ago and didn't have a scholarship. I just feel very lucky to have been able to have done what I've done and I have had a lot of help, a lot of coaches and a lot of great players that have helped me."

Mike Hopkins was both a player and coach. He's on the current staff, which is all former players. He stood on the court with a strand of net tucked into the caps that were handed out.

"He's the same guy just a lot looser," Hopkins said. "He's consistent, tough. All that is the same. The newest thing is he has a great relationship with the players. He communicates with them. He giggles with them. I've seen things evolve since I've been with him since 1989 as a player and coach. He's a coaching jewel. When you look back and see and work with a guy like that ..."

Hopkins choked up a bit and there were tears in his eyes. He didn't say anything else. He turned to join a group of former Syracuse players and celebrate their coach's fourth trip to the Final Four.

Business, labor close on deal for immigration bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Prospects for a Senate deal on an ambitious rewrite of the nation's immigration laws improved markedly as business and labor appeared ready to set aside their differences over a new low-skilled worker program holding up the agreement.

The AFL-CIO and U.S. Chamber of Commerce had been fighting over wages for tens of thousands of low-skilled workers who would be brought in under the new program to fill jobs in construction, hotels and resorts, nursing homes and restaurants, and other industries. But on Friday, officials from both sides said there was basic agreement on the wage issue, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said a final deal on the low-wage worker dispute was very close.

That likely would clear the way for Schumer and seven other senators in a bipartisan group to unveil legislation the week of April 8 to overhaul the U.S. immigration system, strengthening the border, cracking down on employers, allowing in tens of thousands of new high- and low-skilled workers and providing a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country.

"We're feeling very optimistic on immigration: Aspiring Americans will receive the road map to citizenship they deserve and we can modernize 'future flow' without reducing wages for any local workers, regardless of what papers they carry," AFL-CIO spokesman Jeff Hauser said in a statement. "Future flow" refers to future arrivals of legal immigrants.

Under the emerging agreement between business and labor, a new "W'' visa program would bring tens of thousands of lower-skilled workers a year to the country. The program would be capped at 200,000 a year, but the number of visas would fluctuate, depending on unemployment rates, job openings, employer demand and data collected by a new federal bureau pushed by the labor movement as an objective monitor of the market.

The workers would be able to change jobs and could seek permanent residency. Under current temporary worker programs, personnel can't move from employer to employer and have no path to permanent U.S. residence and citizenship. And currently there's no good way for employers to bring many low-skilled workers to the U.S. An existing visa program for low-wage nonagricultural workers is capped at 66,000 per year and is supposed to apply only to seasonal or temporary jobs.

The Chamber of Commerce said workers would earn actual wages paid to American workers or the prevailing wages for the industry they're working in, whichever is higher. The Labor Department determines prevailing wage based on customary rates in specific localities, so that it varies from city to city.

There was also disagreement about how to deal with certain higher-skilled construction jobs, such as electricians and welders, and it appears those will be excluded from the deal, said Geoff Burr, vice president of federal affairs at Associated Builders and Contractors. Burr said his group opposes such an exclusion because, even though unemployment in the construction industry is high right now, at times when it is low there can be labor shortages in high-skilled trades, and contractors want to be able to bring in foreign workers. But unions pressed for the exclusion, Burr said.

The low-skilled worker issue had loomed for weeks as perhaps the toughest matter to settle in monthslong closed-door talks on immigration among the senators, including Republicans John McCain of Arizona and Marco Rubio of Florida. The issue helped sink the last major attempt at immigration overhaul in 2007, when the legislation foundered on the Senate floor after an amendment was added to end a temporary worker program after five years, threatening a key priority of the business community.

The amendment passed by just one vote, 49-48. President Barack Obama, a senator at the time, joined in the narrow majority voting to end the program after five years.

Women may not be the only ones who suffer the effects of changing hormones. Some doctors are noticing that men are reporting some of the same symptoms that women experience in perimenopause and menopause. The medical community is debating whether or not men really do go through a well-defined menopause.

Doctors say that men receiving hormone therapy with testosterone have reported relief of some of the symptoms associated with so-called male menopause. Because men do not go through a well-defined period referred to as menopause, some doctors refer to this problem as androgen (testosterone) decline in the aging male -- or what some people call low testosterone. Men do experience a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone with aging, but this also occurs with conditions such as diabetes.

The Gillmor Gang ? Doc Searls, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, and Steve Gillmor ? takes turns sizing up the new season. With Steve Ballmer running out of room and close to the warning track, we talk about who might be called up from the minors. The consensus is that Steve has 18 months to tur n things around. He?s a proud man, though, and may make the big move to Emeritus sooner than too late.

Dave Winer is back with a nifty pivot on Google Reader?s trip to the showers. The Gillmor Gang rode RSS and podcasting to the Big Show, and it?s good to see Dave going even further back to his outliner roots. More than anything, Winer made the hard stuff look easy and gave the tech generation a voice. Today it seems obvious, but Winer, with a little help from his friends, changed the way the game is played. Batter up.

Why Celebs Shouldn't Be Afraid To Share Their Illnesses

Lil Wayne is not new to the music scene. The Young Money rapper has had records going platinum since 1999 and is currently involved with some of the most popular pop stars recording today. So why did it take 14 years and a near-death experience for Lil Wayne to finally reveal to the world that he's epileptic?

If employee refuses to cooperate with investigation, feel free to fire ...

Not everyone wants to cooperate when an employer begins investigating discrimination or harassment charges. That?s especially true if an employee?s job is on the line because the charges involve him.

The thinking: Why help dig your own grave? Let HR figure out what happened. Don?t say anything that might court more trouble.

Of course, when employees won?t talk, that puts investigators at a disadvantage.

One solution is to tell all em??ployees they must cooperate. Otherwise, they risk being disciplined. If that doesn?t work, you now have an option: Go ahead and fire the employee for re??fusing to help with the investigation.

Recent case: John supervised a staff of subordinates, including a lesbian who married her partner. Around the same time, John proposed putting her on a performance improvement plan (PIP) because he felt she wasn?t working up to capacity. The woman refused to sign off on the PIP. Instead, she went to HR with allegations that she had been sexually harassed and disciplined be??cause of her sexual orientation and marriage.

HR brought in an attorney to conduct an investigation. All employees were ordered to cooperate, including John. He answered many of the lawyer?s questions, but refused to provide details about how he evaluated subordinates, including the woman at the heart of the investigation.

Others employees, however, provided a wealth of information. They recounted several instances in which John?surrounded by male employees, but excluding women?was said to have told sexually offensive jokes.

The investigating attorney ultimately concluded that the woman who filed the complaint had been neither har??assed nor discriminated against based on sex or sexual orientation. John was cleared of any wrongdoing and, according to the report, his request for a PIP was legitimate.

However, the investigator recommended that John either lose his job or take an unpaid suspension for re??fus??ing to completely cooperate with the investigation. The employer fired John.

He sued, alleging he had been fired for engaging in protected ??activity. He claimed that refusing to disclose his evaluation methods was an attempt to protect his subordinates? privacy.

The court didn?t buy it, deciding instead that John had refused to follow rules and specific directives. By ignoring sexual harassment policies prohibiting dirty jokes and by refusing to fully cooperate with the investigation, he revealed professional flaws other than the ones the investigation began looking at. John?s case was dismissed. (McGrory v. Applied Signal Technology, No. H036597, Court of Appeal of California, 2013)

Final note: The employer in this case did everything right?and in the right order. It took a complaint, hired an expert to investigate and took the time to conduct a thorough and fair inquiry. It warned everyone that they were required to cooperate and answer questions to the best of their ability. Then the employer had the expert prepare a comprehensive report containing solid recommendations based on what she uncovered during the investigation.

It also didn?t let the fact that the investigation could not confirm the subordinate?s initial allegation stop it from disciplining John for being uncooperative. There was no rush to judgment. Instead, this was a deliberate and careful process aimed at uncovering what happened.

Obama pitches public works spending to create jobs

MIAMI (AP) ? Trying to show that the economy remains a top priority, President Barack Obama promoted a plan Friday to create construction and other jobs by attracting private money to help rebuild roads, bridges and other public works projects.

Obama fleshed out the details during a visit to a Miami port that's undergoing $2 billion in upgrades paid for with government and private dollars. The quick trip was designed to show that the economy and unemployment are top priorities for a president who also is waging high-profile campaigns on immigration reform and gun control.

Obama said the unemployment rate among construction workers was the highest of any industry, despite being cut nearly in half over the past three years.

"There are few more important things we can do to create jobs right now and strengthen our economy over the long haul than rebuilding the infrastructure that powers our businesses and economy," Obama said. "As president, my top priority is to make sure we are doing everything we can to reignite the true engine of our economic growth ? and that is a rising, thriving middle class."

Among the proposals Obama called for, which require approval from Congress, are:

?$4 billion in new spending on two infrastructure programs that award loans and grants.

?Higher caps on "private activity bonds" to encourage more private spending on highways and other infrastructure projects. State and local governments use the bonds to attract investment.

?Giving foreign pension funds tax-exempt status when selling U.S. infrastructure, property or real estate assets. U.S. pension funds are generally tax exempt in those circumstances. The administration says some international pension funds cite the tax burden as a reason for not investing in American infrastructure.

?A renewed call for a $10 billion national "infrastructure bank."

Arriving at the expansive port in Miami, Obama stood inside a double-barreled, concrete-laced hole in the ground, touring a tunnel project that will connect the port to area highways. The project has received loans and grants under the programs Obama touted and is expected to open next summer.

The president made private-sector infrastructure investment a key part of the economic agenda he rolled out in his State of the Union address last month. In the speech, he also called for a "Fix-It-First" program that would spend $40 billion in taxpayer funds on urgent repairs.

Congressional approval is not a sure bet, considering that House Republicans have shown little appetite for Obama's spending proposals. In fact, the infrastructure bank is an idea Obama called for many times in the past, but it gained little traction during his first term.

Obama's focus on generating more private-sector investment underscores the tough road new spending faces on Capitol Hill, where Republican lawmakers often threaten to block new spending unless it's paid for by cutting taxes or other spending. "These are projects that are helpful to the economy and shouldn't break down on partisan lines," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

But Florida Republicans, including Gov. Rick Scott, faulted Obama for being "late to the party." Before Obama arrived in Florida, Scott argued that state taxpayers have had to pick up too much of the tab for this and other port projects because the president was slow to support them.

Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, told reporters traveling with Obama that the initiatives discussed Friday will cost $21 billion, not including the $40 billion for "Fix-It-First." Krueger said any increased spending associated with the proposals would not add to the deficit.

Krueger said details of how the programs would be paid for would be included in the budget Obama is scheduled to release on April 10.

Hitting The Jackpot In Laughlin - Leisure Group Travel

This fun-filled oasis in the Nevada desert is lush with group-friendly options

Enjoy the waterfront on a stroll along the Laughlin Riverwalk. August?s Colorado River Regatta sparks the area?s summer events calendar.

Enjoy the waterfront on a stroll along the Laughlin Riverwalk.

As a tour operator, it?s not every day you have the opportunity to write about a destination that means so much to you. Laughlin is such a place for me as my first tour was to Laughlin in 1981 when it was a sleepy little town with two casinos. It?s grown by leaps and bounds ever since and is a perfect destination for groups looking for value, outdoor adventure, gaming, dining and just plain fun. Combine the following features for a winning itinerary and happy guests:

Laughlin?s compact hotel corridor lines the banks of one of the most pristine segments of the Colorado River. For a nominal fee, water taxis travel from one hotel dock to another on what some call Laughlin?s ?main street? ? the Colorado River.

One of the most popular group activities is riverboat cruising with two different paddlewheel-style boats offering narrated cruises. The Celebration and USS Riverside are double-deck vessels with climate-controlled lower levels and open-air top decks. In addition to scheduled cruises, charters are available for groups of up to 80.

London Jet Boat Tours depart Laughlin and travel to Lake Havasu, home of the London Bridge. The full-day tour allows time for sightseeing, shopping and lunch on your own in Lake Havasu before returning to Laughlin. Groups that like a little more soft adventure can canoe and kayak on the river with Desert River Outfitters.

    Laughlin on the Water

    Laughlin on the Water

Laughlin is located at the crossroads of three states ? Nevada, California and Arizona. Rugged mountain ranges that change colors with the sunset, majestic desert landscapes and the mighty Colorado River set the stage for year-round outdoor adventure.

The newest Laughlin attraction, the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails project, has been named one of the nation?s most promising projects designed to protect special places and reconnect Americans to the outdoors. The project consists of nine miles of trails for bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians, and includes expansion of the Laughlin Riverwalk. It enhances the area as a destination for eco-tourism and outdoor adventure, and helps preserve some unique vistas and historic sites related to the construction of Davis Dam. Highlights include:

    • Three trail loops that extend south from Davis Dam for approximately two miles along the Colorado River and an additional three-mile Desert Trail.
    • The Riverwalk Exploration Trail Loop, an extension of the Laughlin Riverwalk, running two miles adjacent to the Colorado River from the hotel resorts up to the new Pyramid Canyon day-use area at the base of Davis Dam.
    • The Equestrian Trailhead, offering access to two multi-use dirt trails, the 2.75-mile Horseshoe Trail Loop and three-mile Desert Trail.

Laughlin?s ?Rockets over the River? is one of the most spectacular July Fourth fireworks displays in the West. The fireworks, choreographed to patriotic music, are launched above the river directly across from the hotels. There can be one or two shows depending on where the holiday falls. The viewing is ideal from the riverwalk.

Laughlin?s International Film Festival in October showcases the talents of independent filmmakers from around the world. The festival includes Q&A with the filmmakers and workshops for aspiring filmmakers. And it wouldn?t be a film festival without a red carpet gala.

Laughlin has hosted many military reunions over the years, and in November, Veteran?s Day weekend is celebrated with a party to honor veterans. The weekend includes live music, vendors, interactive displays and a guard ceremony. Laughlin resorts host their own special events to complement the weekend?s festivities.

    Laughlin at Night

    Laughlin at Night

There is something for every taste in Laughlin, ranging from elegant gourmet dining to ethnic cuisine to national fast-food chains to extravagant buffets, 24-hour cafes and decadent Sunday champagne brunches. The Range Steakhouse at Harrah?s Laughlin has the perfect balance of a classic steakhouse menu, extensive wine list, warm ambience and beautiful river views. Another favorite gourmet dining?experience with spectacular views of the river is the Riveside Resort?s Gourmet Room. The French cuisine is served tableside in a cozy, elegant setting.

Pints Microbrewery at the Colorado Belle is not your typical sports bar. In addition to the usual fare like wood-fired pizzas, burgers and wings, you can build your own omelet or order flapjacks because they?re open 24 hours. For those wanting a comfortable favorite, Outback Steakhouse and Joe?s Crab Shack bring their nationally recognized eateries to Laughlin. Outback is tucked inside the Aquarius Resort, and Joe?s at the Golden Nugget Laughlin has both indoor dining and an extended outdoor deck along the river.

All nine Laughlin casino resorts offer 24-hour gaming and the latest in video and slot machines, table games, keno and bingo. Special tournaments and players club promotions are offered regularly by each resort.

Laughlin is home to some terrific entertainment that you don?t have to spend an arm and a leg to see. Big-name artists perform in casino showrooms or outdoor arenas each weekend, and lounge acts feature local musicians, dance floors and drink specials. Laughlin also has two classic car museums, a 34-lane, state-of-the-art bowling center with Cosmic Bowling, 15 screens in two movie theaters and resort boutique shops.

Within a couple hours drive is Oatman, an old Arizona mining town on Route 66; an exotic animal sanctuary; Grand Canyon Caverns; the West Rim of the Grand Canyon; and a local winery and distillery. For the golf enthusiast, there are four 18-hole championship courses within minutes of the Laughlin resorts.

Laughlin is a remarkable value for groups. Comfortable accommodations at unbelievable group rates, reasonably priced food options, spa salons, fitness centers, free parking and no resort fees are but a few of the drawing cards. And saving money on room rates and food? means more to spend on activities and entertainment.

Overall, Laughlin is a relaxed, friendly, value-packed destination with something for everyone. For tour planners, it?s a sure bet.

GIRL, CRAFTED: Going Solo: a staycation on my own

    Friday I am taking a mini-vacation. Solo.?
I'm not going far--just downtown Ottawa, where I'll be staying at the very cool Hotel Indigo--but this is a first. I realized recently that I have never done anything like this. I've traveled on my own, but always heading towards a person I was visiting. I have never taken time to be alone, for the purposes of leisure, away from the dubious respite of my messy house.

I have taken partners to hotels or inns for downtime; indeed, I am a huge proponent of mini stay-cations, and recommend everyone takes one from time to time with their sweetie. But it just never really occurred ?to me before to give myself that same TLC, all on my own. Of course, it's been a while since I was single, but I don't think a person should have to be single to do this. Solitary time, especially for us introverts, is crucial. When one is mated with another human, that time becomes even more scarce; maybe it's important to reclaim it.?

I'm not sure how it's going to feel to do this. I'm nervous, to be honest; my goal is to spend the time *alone*, not chatting on the phone or on google chat. I'm going to paint my toenails, tweeze my eyebrows, and go to dinner. I'm going to watch whatever movies I want, and in the morning I'm going to head down to the Byward Market for some bread and treats. I will decide what I want to do and when I want to do it, all on my own--no compromising, group planning, or negotiating. I will be at the mercy of my own whim.

It's kind of scary, though I don't know why.?

You can follow my tweets at @girlcrafted with hashtag #jordantime and there'll be a blog post after the stay. Or possibly during it, if I'm lonely for the sound of my own 'voice'.

    See you on the flipside.

A New Week in Gaming Apps for an All-New Kotaku

This week's special late edition of the Week in Gaming Apps is brought to you by leaning how to use an entirely new publishing system on the fly. It's a learning experience. Oh my goodness these images are so big.

Fortunately many of this week's gaming apps were big as well. We've got Magicka on iPad now! Ms. Splosion Man isn't just for Xbox Live Arcade anymore! Dungeon Hearts arrived! And hey, we've got a jousting game now! I am going to run out of exclamation points.

    Yep, ran out.

While I go order more, go look at...

    What We Played This Week

    S

    Grow, Dammit! - iOS - $1.99

The classic tale of a space plant trying to save his seedling nephews from the dark corners of planetoids by manipulating sunlight. Yeah, that old trope.

    S

Pili Pili Rush - iOS, Android - Free

A colorful cartoon puzzle platformer about egg gathering, from the makers of The Flying Hamster and several non-hamster games. Quite lovely, though I still prefer the hamster.

    S

    Ms. Splosion Man - iOS - $2.99

Twisted Pixel's hilarious Xbox Live Arcade platformer debuted on PC and iPad this week, bringing the joy of Ms. Splosion to the masses. She's my new girlfriend. And hey, another iOS Microsoft game!

    S

Lie Swatter - iOS - Free

From Jellyvision, the makers of You Don't Know Jack, comes this turn-based quiz game that challenges players to sort truth from lies. It's pretty damn entertaining, and informative!

    S

Quantum Legacy HD Turbo - iOS - $1.99

Arcade space battles narrated by the worst voice acting ever. I think it's all tongue-in-cheek. Pretty sure. Neat combat, and the Star Trek references are a plus.

    S

Knight Storm - iOS - Free

Mother-loving jousting, dammit. There's a little castle-building and maintenance here, plus the odd melee battle, but the reason for Knight Storm is jousting, and it's so good.

    S

    Dungeon Hearts - iPad - $2.99

Devolver Digital delivers a truly unique puzzle role-playing experience. Might look like a rhythm game, but this is a match-explosion title with a scrolling playfield. It's urgent and wonderful.

    S

Fantasy Quest - iOS - Free

This week Gamevil released an odd little turn-based role-playing/kingdom builder/online multiplayer battle game. Actually they do that a lot. Worked out well this time.

App Reviews for the Week of 3/25 - 3/29

Red, green and blue ? these are the primary colors, which can be mixed together in varying amounts to create every color of the visible spectrum. I learned this in my grade school art program. At the time I was convinced the teacher made it up to cover for the fact that they only had enough money in the budget for three colors of bulk paint. What good is mixing colors when you can just buy a box of assorted pre-rendered crayons, markers or paints? Read?

You could search the iTunes app store for days and not come close to finding a game with the charm and polish of Big FishGames' Fetch. It's an animated movie come to life, an adventure riddled with arcade action wrapped around a warm beating heart. It's the story of a boy and his dog. Read?

When developer First5 Games were looking for a fresh method of movement for their new platforming game, they found inspiration in those old Wacky Wall Crawler toys you'd get for a quarter out of supermarket vending machines as a kid. You know, the ones with all the sticky legs? I used to tear off their limbs. I consider Cling!payback. Read?

Back in January, Square Enix released Final Fantasy: All the Bravest,a game about getting as many Final Fantasy character sprites on the screen at one time while finding creative new ways for players to pay for things. It wasn't a very good game. What Square Enix should have done was make Nimble Quest, the latest from the creators of Tiny Tower. Read?

As promised last month, Paradox Interactive and mobile developer Ludosity have teamed up to deliver a little cross-platform Magickamayhem for the iPhone and Android. Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet is nowhere near as deep and destructively satisfying as its PC inspiration, but it's got the right idea. the right idea, by the way, is killing your friends with magic.
