Ongoing effort shows promise in reducing stress in the workplace through cost-effective online tools

EMBARGOED UNTIL 12:01 A.M. ET, Tuesday, April 30, 2013, Cleveland: The use of Internet-based stress management programs (ISM) effectively reduce stress for a sustainable period, according to a Cleveland Clinic study published recently in Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Online stress management programs aim to increase accessibility for individuals affected by chronic stress at a lesser cost than traditional methods. Data suggests that stress reduction using ISM is comparable to face-to-face stress management.

Three-hundred study participants completed an eight-week ISM program where they received online relaxation practice materials, strategies to help cope with life's stressors, stress assessments at the beginning and end of the program, and daily topics to inspire participants to continue the meditation and relaxation techniques.

Program participants, who were compared with a control group, showed a significant decrease in perceived stress from high levels to average, as well as greatly improved emotional wellbeing, compared with the pre-program results and to participants of the control group. Results confirmed a positive correlation between the number of meditations completed per week and perceived stress reduction.

"Our recent findings provide individuals and employers with a new option to consider for themselves or their employees' stress management," said Michael Roizen, MD, Chief Wellness Officer at Cleveland Clinic. "Unmanaged stress causes some of the highest healthcare costs for employers and has a lasting impact on everyone; this study implies such health effect may be readily reduced."

Using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to measure a person's perception of stress, individual results were based on a 0 (best) to 40 scale. Study participants' stress levels prior to ISM averaged 23.05, much higher than the U.S. norm, 13.7 for females and 12.1 for males. Relative to a control group, active participants demonstrated a substantial stress score improvement of 4.04. Individuals who completed five meditations per week were likely to experience a 6.12 decrease in perceived stress scores vs. practicing once per week.

Chronic stress is a major public health issue and is associated with increased health risk and chronic disease. Comparable to smoking, psychological distress is more significant in terms of health risks to blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. A national survey from the American Psychological Association (Stress in America) showed that 75 percent of American adults continue to report high levels of stress despite an improving economy, with little accessibility to a feasible stress management program. Most Americans cite work as being the most stressful component in their lives.

Face-to-face stress management programs often include massage therapy, exercise, diet modification, acupuncture, and meditation, whereas ISM focuses heavily on achieving a state of mindfulness through relaxation and meditation, and guided imagery. To compare the two types of programs, standard outcome measures including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, Adult Self-Transcendence Inventory, among others, were observed and recorded throughout the 12-week study.

The feasibility study was a joint effort with GE (NYSE: GE), which offered the ISM program to employees in three of its sites as part of the trial.

"Understanding consumer behavior related to health and healthcare is critical to advancing care delivery," said Mitch Higashi, chief economist for GE Healthcare. "In this case, demonstrating how workplace stress management programs could be delivered effectively in online formats provides important insights for future innovation."

The stress management program used for the research, Stress Free Now (SFN), was designed by Cleveland Clinic experts and is sold at Cleveland Clinic's Wellness site. On-going research continues in order to improve workplace wellbeing and quality of life using ISM programs. SFN has been modified following the results of this study, allowing for increased likelihood of program completion, and simpler implementation within the workplace with the purpose of improving stress in a corporate environment.

Discuss HR: 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business

Today is the first post in our guest blogger week and we welcome Ruth Hinds who looks at why you should write a blog.? (Ed Scrivener) 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Blogging For Your HR Business If you?re serious about growing your HR business and building a steady stream of enquiries and potential clients, you?ve probably heard that blogging could be a great way to take things to the next level. With statistics showing that 57% of businesses have acquired a new customer through their blog, rising to 92% for those which blog regularly (HubSpot State of Inbound Marketing, 2012), it?s clear that there?s massive potential for businesses that are getting it right. Here are five reasons why you should be blogging for your HR business. It?s a great way to boost your search engine rankings Search engines such as Google love fresh content, and writing a regular blog post on your website is a sure-fire way to make sure that your business appears in the results when people are searching for businesses just like yours. At the moment, your site might rank on the tenth page when users are looking for what you offer. It?s unlikely that anyone will look beyond the first page of results, so you?re essentially just giving away custom to your competitors. A consistent approach to blogging will boost your rankings, and this has an obvious positive impact on the number of enquiries and new clients that you acquire. Blog content can be repurposed for maximum exposure Once your blog post is written, it can be used over and over again to market your business. Of course, you?ll initially share it with your social media followers and include it in your email newsletter. You might send it directly to clients that you think it would benefit. Beyond the obvious though, the only limit is your creativity. You could record the content as a webinar, or turn several posts into an e-book. When you have a robust content strategy in place, it also guides the rest of your marketing materials for the rest of the month. Just one post can guide your social media updates and other collateral, giving you inspiration and one less thing to worry about. You?ll gain a reputation as a thought leader in your field If you?re creating top notch content on a regular basis, people will start to sit up and take notice. They?ll recognise just how knowledgeable you are in your area of expertise, and will be convinced that when they need services just like yours, they should turn to you. Don?t worry about ?giving away your knowledge for free?. Positioning yourself as a thought leader in your field with result in stronger relationships and a feeling of trust amongst your followers, which will only have a positive affect on your bottom line. It gives potential customers a reason to revisit your website So many HR consultants set up a website for their business but then never update their content. The result of this is that potential customers visit once, but then forget all about it. A site that isn?t visited regularly and provides a useful resource for visitors is essentially a waste of money. When you blog on a regular basis, you?re giving people a reason to return and see what you?re all about. Strong blog content, coupled with compelling website copy that inspires readers to take action is the secret ingredient for making your site work for you. It?s a cost effective marketing tool? Marketing your business can cost a small fortune, especially if you?re using traditional methods such as magazine advertising. One of the beauties of blogging is that it?s remarkably cost effective. Yes, you?ll have to invest some time in coming up with content ideas and crafting engaging posts, but this process comes much easier with practice. If you struggle with this type of writing or you just don?t have the time, you could even use the services of a copywriter. Making a small investment to bring in the professionals will mean that you?re better placed for success from the start. You should always make sure that you?re using a writer with experience in your field and a good grasp of what your business does. As you can see, blogging for your HR business can have many benefits when it comes to attracting new clients and boosting your brand awareness. To get ahead of the crowd and gain a competitive edge against others in your sector, it?s well worth considering whether it should be in your marketing mix. Are you thinking about building a blog? What?s stopping you from getting started? Ruth Hinds is a former HR professional with experience at business partner and management level in the public and private sector. She is now the director of Red North Media, a copywriting and business blogging consultancy that focuses on solutions for HR and recruitment businesses. Fiat Industrial Q1 profit down on soft truck sales

MILAN (AP) ? Fiat Industrial, the Italian maker of heavy vehicles, on Tuesday reduced its full-year forecasts after reporting a 22 percent drop in first-quarter profits due to weak sales of trucks and construction vehicles.

Fiat Industrial SpA reported net profit in the quarter ending March 31 was 138 million euros ($181 million), down from a restated 177 million euros in 2012. Revenue was flat at 5.8 billion euros thanks to higher sales of farm equipment which helped offset declines in truck sales and construction vehicle revenues, which were down 27 percent.

Fiat Industrial shares closed down 5.3 percent at 8.57 euros.

Fiat Industrial Chairman Sergio Marchionne said the lower 2013 forecasts were driven by "renewed pessimism on the construction side," which is expected to continue throughout the year, and uncertainty over truck sales in Europe, where the market contracted 15 percent in the quarter.

Revenues at the Iveco truck division dropped 4 percent to 1.8 billion euros, with deliveries in Europe down 7.7 percent. Iveco's strongest markets in southern Europe are suffering the strongest declines, with Italy down by 25 percent and Spain by 20 percent.

The company, which is in the process of fully merging with its U.S.-based CNH agricultural and construction subsidiary, lowered its forecast of achieving 5 percent revenue growth to a range of between 3 percent and 4 percent. The company raised its debt forecast for the end of the year to 1.4 billion euros to 1.6 billion euros.

Marchionne said he expects to complete the CNH merger and list the new company on Wall Street by the end of the third quarter.

Fiat Industrial, which already controls 88 percent of CNH, is seeking a full merger with the U.S. subsidiary to boost its scale and improve efficiency.

Man makes living by searching subway grates for lost treasure

What lies beneath: Subway grate (ThinkStock)

One person's lost iPhone is another man's income.

A story in the New York Post follows Eliel Santos on his hunt for cash, jewelry and technology?all dropped and probably assumed gone forever down the subway grates.

Santos has been snagging subway loot for the past eight years. He uses dental floss, mousetrap glue?and a sharp eye. And what he finds, he pawns. He's good at it, too: The Puerto Rican native, who lives in the Bronx, checks grates from 23rd street to 47th street, making about $150 a day.

?If you drop it, I?m going to pick it up?so be careful,? the 38-year-old told the Post.

But Santos also provides a pro bono service: He helps the frantic find items they?ve dropped, once finding a man?s keys and another man?s wedding ring. He?s rewarded by their thanks and, usually, some cash.

Times Square, he said, is a particularly good place for dropped cash and iPhones: ?When people text while they are standing on a grate, their phones fall in,? he said.

His biggest one-day haul: a diamond-and-gold bracelet he pawned for $1,800. Another day he found three dropped iPhones. ?I have a lot of patience and optimism,? he said.

?If I want something," Santos added, "I?m going to get it.?

Subway grates are notorious for swallowing treasured items. But sometimes, there are happy endings. Last year, when a New York City woman lost her ring, she called the nonemergency 311 line and a Con Ed employee searched underground?and actually recovered it.

2 police officers shot as Italian government sworn in - World News

Gabriel Bouys / AFP - Getty Images

An Italian policeman is carried away by paramedics after two policemen were wounded in a shooting outside the Italian prime minister's offices as the country's new ministers were being sworn in on Sunday.

By Reuters

ROME ? Two police officers were shot and wounded outside the Italian prime minister's office on Sunday as Enrico Letta's new government was being sworn in around a mile away at the president's palace, RAI state television reported.

One of the officers was shot in the neck and was in a serious condition, a police official said.

One man, described as unemployed and in his 40s, was arrested at the scene of the shooting, a witness said, and it was initially unclear whether the attack was linked to the launch of the new government.

Newly installed Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said the attack appeared to be an isolated incident.

"An initial examination of the incident suggests that this can be considered as an isolated act," Alfano told reporters, adding that further checks were being carried out.

He said there was no cause for concern about the overall security situation in Italy but added that protective measures had been stepped up at potential targets.

Letta, 46, the moderate deputy head of the Democratic Party (PD), on Saturday ended two months of political stalemate since February's inconclusive election when he brought together former political rivals in a broad coalition government.

Letta's ministers stepped forward one by one to swear allegiance to the republic before President Giorgio Napolitano, who personally picked Letta as prime minister and had a central role in the choice of his cabinet team.

(AP Photo/Matt Sayles, File)

(AP) ? Michael Jackson's mother's allegations that the company promoting his comeback failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted in his death are at the center of a civil trial opening Monday.

Jurors will listen to remarks from attorneys who hope to frame the issues before testimony begins in the months-long trial.

Lawyers for concert giant AEG Live contend the company did nothing wrong and could not have foreseen the circumstances that led to Jackson's death in June 2009 at age 50.

The case will focus on the last few months of Jackson's life and his overall health and financial history. Jurors will also hear evidence throughout the case about Conrad Murray, the former cardiologist convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter after giving him doses of the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid.

Millions, and possibly billions, of dollars are at stake. Any award in the case will be determined by a jury of six men and six women who have agreed to hear the case, which may last 90 trial days.

Lawyers for Katherine Jackson and the singer's three children have said AEG failed to spot red flags about Murray's finances and created a conflict of interest for him between a major payday and maintaining the superstar's health.

Murray agreed to serve as Jackson's doctor for the planned series of "This Is It" comeback shows in London for $150,000 per month, but Jackson died before the superstar and AEG officials signed the agreement.

AEG contends it did not hire Murray, who had previously treated Jackson and who the singer requested serve as his physician.

Murray remains jailed and is appealing his conviction.

The trial will address issues about Jackson's health and finances that were not factors in Murray's criminal trial, and may also feature testimony from the singer's two oldest children. Stars such as Diana Ross, Spike Lee and Quincy Jones are also listed as potential witnesses, and several top AEG executives are expected to testify.

PFT: SEC accounts for 63 picks ? a quarter of the draft

Draft Texans FootballAP

After analyzing the draft needs of all 32 teams, PFT will review how well each team addressed those needs. Up next: The Houston Texans.

What they needed: Wide receiver, outside linebacker, guard, nose tackle, tight end.

Who they got:
Round 1: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson

Round 2: D.J. Swearinger, SS, South Carolina

Round 3: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina

Round 3: Sam Montgomery, DE, Louisiana State

Round 4: Trevardo Williams, DE, Connecticut

Round 6: David Quessenberry, OT, San Jose State

Round 6: Alan Bonner, WR, Jacksonville State

Round 6: Chris Jones, DT, Bowling Green

Round 6: Ryan Griffin, TE, Connecticut

Where they hit: Hopkins overcame the pre-draft smear campaign, and might be the kind of big-play threat they?ve lacked at receiver (other than that Andre Johnson guy, of course). They also added some good offensive line depth in Williams and Quessenberry, guys who should be in the mix this year and could start down the line.

Where they missed: Some more pass rush help would have been nice, and while Williams has promise, there are a lot of folks in the scouting community who think Montgomery?s a waste of time. The talent is there, but that?s not the problem for him. Landing on a good team might create the atmosphere he needs, but the Texans can?t count on him in the short term. The good news is they don?t have to.

Impact rookies: Swearinger will make an impact on opponents, mostly. One of the true hitters in this class, he?s an enforcer in the back of the defense, the kind of guy Ed Reed would have loved lining up next to in Baltimore. He should be a huge benefit on special teams, as he has explosive ability and doesn?t mind dropping a shoulder into someone.

Long-term prospects: Even if Hopkins is the only rookie that contributes, that?s OK for the Texans, who didn?t enter the offseason with many holes to fill. But they need Hopkins to contribute quickly. Reed?s signing was symbolic as much as tangible, as they?re hoping some of his Ravens mojo rubs off on a team with talent, which has disappointed in the postseason. They drafted a few guys who could become the next wave of replacements for departed veterans, but this is clearly a team that sees the window closing, if not this year then soon.

Dan Jenkins - a legendary sports writer - Golf feature

Dan Jenkins, a legendary golf writer, dedicated more than 60 years of his life to sports covering thousands of events all over the world.

Larry King, an American?television and radio host, called?Jenkins?"the quintessential Sports Illustrated writer" and "?the best sportswriter in America."

He is the only writer that most of the golf readers have ever followed. For the last few decades, he was the man on whom people can rely on for the news that television and newspaper could not tell them.

He started writing when players like Ben Hogan used to play on the golf course and still writing and covering the stars like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald.

He covered US Open in 1951 for the first time in his career when Hogan shot 67 to finish the final round at Oakland Hills to win the major event.

Jenkins?s career goes from a manual typewriter to Twitter. He started working for Golf Digest n 1985 and still writes for it. He has also written 20 books during his writing career including best sellers Baja Oklahoma, Dead Solid Perfect, and Semi-Tough.

While working for the Golf Digest, Jenkins played 18-hole course with President Bush Sr. Following that, Hord Hardin, president of Augusta National Golf Club, invited him to stay for few days at the course, which he accepted wholeheartedly.

His way of golf writing is admired by many as he always tried to integrate informality, insight and humour all together to make it more interesting to read.

However, for the sake of a good joke, he never neglected the significance of accuracy.

"Even though I was making a stab at humour, I do not think I ever wrote a line I did not believe," he said. "When something great happens, you do not have to be funny; you just have to be accurate.?

Jenkins?s service to the game of golf has finally paid him off in form of induction of his name in the World Golf Hall of Fame next year. He will be the sixth media member to be selected for the Hall of Fame. Other five media members include writers Bernard Darwin, Bob Harlow, Herb Graffis, Herbert Warren Wind and television producer Frank Chirkinian and were inducted posthumously.

"Being from Fort Worth, I would follow Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson anywhere," Jenkins said after his selection through Lifetime Achievement category. "Since they are in there, I am happy to be the third guy from Fort Worth so included.

"I am delighted to be in such good company with the people who are already in there, especially the players."

Jenkins has already been inducted in the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Hall of Fame and Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Moreover, Memorial Journalism Award and PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism are his other achievements.

For the last 16 years at Golf Digest, he has spent most of his time making fun and parodying selfish tour players, unexciting sports psychologists and some silly tournament sponsors. Golf is something more than just a game for Jenkins and he has enjoyed writing and speaking about it more than anyone around the world. He is among the people who have made this game interesting and lovable to watch. It is time now that someone else needs to take his position and entertain the golf fans as he did for 60 years.

Synergist Founder Hopes To Raise $25K Using The Company's Own Crowdfunding Platform

synergist logoSites like Kickstarter have been used to crowdfund a wide range of projects, but I don't think they've ever done what Synergist is attempting today ? they've never crowdfunded themselves. The site was founded by 17-year-old Jared Kleinert, who described Synergist as a mix of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding for social enterprises (i.e., organizations that aim to do good, rather than make money, but apply commercial strategies to achieve those aims). The funding mechanism is pretty similar to Kickstarter ? projects need to reach their funding target in order to receive any money, and the money is given for rewards, not equity. But Kleinert emphasized that the fundraising is really only a small part of the process.

Cat saved by fireman as kitten looks on (video) - AMERICAblog

This story is from a few years back, but it?s so adorable. A woman had a fire at her home, she grabbed her cat and ran out, only to realize that her other cat was still inside.

She was beside herself with grief.

So the fireman broke a window, ran inside, got the second cat ? which was unconscious by the back door, paw marks on the screen as if it had tried in vain to get out, brought the cat outside, and put an oxygen mask on its face, then ran back to fight the fire. When he came back, the cat ? to his surprise ? was walking around.

Boogie and Smokey

These are not the cats in question, but rather a reader?s pets, Boogie and Smokey, who are standing in for the actual cats in this story, as I don?t have rights to the photo I link to.

There?s an adorable photo of him giving the cat oxygen, and one of the cat?s kittens looking one.

And here?s a newscast about it, interviewing the woman and the firemen.

Living with Google Glass, Day Three: Security Checkpoint

You might be inclined to think that airport security is not the best place to wear Google Glass. You'd probably be right, but given the amount that I travel it was pretty-well inevitable that I'd cross through some security checkpoint before the course of this testing would be through.

I'm honored to be part of the X-Prize Visioneering conference this week, a gathering of incredible minds putting their considerable brainpower behind the creation of competitions to make the world a better place. But, to take part I'd have to get out to California, and that meant yet another long flight across the country -- and another trip through the full-body scanner. The question is, how would the folks at airport security react to it?

Toxic BP oil clean-up chemical sickening those exposed

>>> hey, guess what? corporations are not people. if you are a corporation, and you get into trouble, you cannot go to prison as a corporation. show your executive office or something maybe can go to prison, but in terms of you as a corporation, paying for your crimes, is usually literally paying for your crimes. you pay money. you pay a fine. so our happy friday pop quiz tonight is this -- what is the single largest fine ever imposed on a corp rag in the united states ? what's the largest amount of money that any u.s. court ever made a company pay for its crimes? the answer? ding. $4.5 billion. 4.5 billion to be paid by the company that does not want you to pronounce the petroleum in their name. they just want you to call them by their initiales. bp . think of this green, green sun flower when you think of them and not say british petroleum . bp earned bragging rights for being charged the largest fine ever in american history . they earned it in part for lying. bp caused the largest accidental oil spill in world history three years ago this week. and their full culpability for that spill is still being worked out along with the other companies that are responsible. they are currently on trial in new or lean. but the bp lying part of it, that part has been adjudicated. bp admitted in court that while they said publicly and to congress even, that their gushing well only leaking 5,000 barreles a day, merely a flesh wound. while they said that publicly, not only was that wrong, but they knew it was wrong. bp was having all sort of discussions about how it wasn't 5,000 barrels a day. it was more like 60,000 or maybe 140,000 barrels a day. but publicly, they kept assuring everybody that it was no big deal , only 5. the important part was not just that bp was wrong or that they didn't know the answer and they were getting. the important part in their culpability, the reason they paid the largest corporate fine in history of corporate fines was not because they got it wrong, it is because they did know the truth and they lied about it. they lied about it publicly and lied about it to congress. in the three years since the worst oil spill ever, there is a slow unfolding in the courts and the gulf of things that we, the public, did not know at the time of the spill. some of them, it turns out, the oil companies knew what the truth was and kept it from us. other unanswered questions, three years down the road, maybe we are knew it all along or if they were in the dark until now just like we were. this week, "newsweek" published remarkable new reporting on the question that i frankly was asked the most when i was down at the gulf covering this story. the worry that was expressed to me the most by people who live on the gulf coast and make their living on the water there, three years ago in the middle of the spill, this is what folks worry about more than anything. we are getting answered about it now three years later. for now crews are lying on the tried and true method of kpem cal dispushants. these are chemicals you have seen dusted offer the oil slick . bp dispursed thousands of gallons on the oil slick , not to mention that pumped to the leak. that is more used on any oil spell ever. the chemicals are toxic. probably. we don't really know what's in them.

>> what are the long-term impacts of breathing this? of touching the oil? of touching the dispersant. these are all questions that nobody really knows the answer to. so we need scientific data. we need doctors to help people when they do come in contact with this.

>> one of the response technologies so controversial for this, congressman, is the issue of dispersants. one of the complication says that they are seen as pro pry tarity technology. the companies that makes them don't say what is in them.

>> we can't allow for the company to use chemicals in ways that could ultimately have profound impacts on not only the food that is provided from that region, from the fishing, but also the impact that it could ultimately have upon human beings .

>> are you also hearing concerns voiced about the long-term impacts of dispersants? that's something i know fisherman, when i was there, were talking about. and they are doing long-term studies, but they don't know.

>> very much so. they don't no the long-term impacts and that's what is what really scares people here.

>> that is what really scares people. now, three years down the road, some of the very ominous unanswered questions asked on the gulf coast when that spill was happening and dumping all of that dispursant into the sea it make it better, some of questions are finally beginning to be answered. joining me is mark hartzguard. contributor for the daily beast . what bp doesn't want you to know about the 2010 gulf spill is his article. thanks for joining us. nice to have you here.

>> thanks for inviting me.

>> i know you've been in the gulf coast talking to folks who came in contact with this dispursant. what did you find?

>> that people are still suffering from this and that the illnesses at the time were very, very severe. basically, an odd combination of illnesses. striking the skin, lungs and brain all at once. and above all, what i found, is that bp knew this at the time. bp was told that this correxit dispursant, told by them, what chemicals were in there and that workers and anyone who came in contact with it, this was extremely hazardous stuff and they needed it protective gear . they needed training and everybody and bp buried that report in toward further its goal of basically making the oil appear to disappear. to cover up this oil spill and to get it off of tv screens in the front pages.

>> that is always been one of the political conundrums, thinking about the use of dispursant, from a political perspectispe perspective. even if the oil is still there and maybe made into something you can't see by addition of another chemical that might be just as toxic. but isn't there an argument to be made for using dispursants for the use of breaking oil down. allowing it to be exposed more to the elements that might make it -- might make the spill go away faster?

>> to be fair. i interviewed the epa add money straighter in charge at that time and that's what she said. she said we faced a choice between bad and worse. we didn't like the idea of the dispursant but we thought it was better to apply it to keep the oil from hitting coast lines. to keep it from hitting a l beaches and epa administrator jackson said that the national commission appointed by president obama did not find fauld, quote unquote . so hardly a ringing endorse many of it but not finding fault. let's remember, epa did not have the legal authority to force bp not to use this. administrator jackson wrote them a letter. this is in the story on may 19 . asking them to stop using the toxic dispursant but she did not have the opportunity to force them to stop and bp wrote back the next day and essentially said, sorry, we are going to continue.

>> the people made sick by exposure to correxit, and again the ways this he were made sick, are the ways you point out were predicted or described by the company that makes it which is why they should they should be used in such careful ways. are the people who made sick by this chemical seeking redress? what are they doing to get their medical expenses covered? are they settled with the residents that covered the rest of the oil spill ?

>> they are trying, rachel. but it'll be an uphill path because, now, you know, bp set aside last year, roughly $8 billion for medical claims. but unfortunately moestd of the illnesses that these people are suffering from are not covered under that settlement and that's partly because they were not well represented by the plaintiff's committee, the attorneys handling that. so it is a kind of a tragedy that goes on. some of them have already taken buyouts from bp but they are paid pennies on the dollar and at $60,000 and their medical bills are way beyond that. so you know, i think that is part of the reason that i felt so strongly about getting this story out is that these people were basically treated as collateral damage by bp . as part of bp 's coverup, they were willing to sacrifice the health of the workers, hundreds and possibly thousands of them, coastal residents, a 3-year-old boy we write about in startry who was fine until he started breathing this stuff in. now he is terribly sick. let's not forget the eco system where 33%, one-third of the seafood we americans eat come out of that gulf. that too was terribly damaged by this use of correxit. and this name of the dispursant, once you put that with oil it is 52 times more tomore toxic.

>> mark herts fw aard, also the author of "hot." thanks for talking with us tonight.

>> thanks for airing it.

>> i appreciate it.

>> are you a deeply suspicious, deeply suspicious person, but you can't seem to find your soul mate ? i have some very bad advice for you,

Streaming eagles: Webcam turns chicks into stars

>>> finally tonight, from humble bay, california. it's a two american bald eagles and their new eeg lets, whose ever meal and chirp are being beamed to a growing crowd of fans around the world.

>> monty spends a lot of term nursing birding back to health and this one survived a gun shot wound.

>> you can see how that wing wants to droop.

>> but these days, he and his staff and nearly 300,000 fans online, can't keep their eyes off the computer screen . two nesting eagles with their two new chicks born this week.

>> one of the things that's nice about it is it really demonstrates that the endangered species act works.

>> in fact, since the passage of that act four decades ago, the stretch that's seen the numbers of nesting eagles rise to nearly 10,000 today, this is the first pair to homestead on the shores of humble bay. a made for life couple. she's the one with the single birt feather, but mom and dad equally generous at feeding time .

787 Dreamliner flies to Kenya from Ethiopia

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? An official with Ethiopian Airlines says one of the company's Dreamliners is scheduled to fly from Ethiopia to Kenya's capital, the first commercial flight since air safety authorities grounded the passenger jets after incidents with smoldering batteries on two different planes in January.

The Boeing 787 passenger jet was scheduled to arrive in Nairobi from Addis Ababa on Saturday afternoon.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has approved Boeing's redesigned battery system, which the company says sharply reduces the risk of fire.

A Boeing engineer told reporters in Nairobi this week that all potential causes of battery fire have been eliminated with the new system.

There are 50 Dreamliners in service around the world. Boeing said Wednesday that deliveries of the 787 should resume in early May.

Down 3-0, Celtics try avoid sweep Sunday vs Knicks

(AP) ? Hanging on a wall of the Celtics' practice facility, opposite the faded banners that hung in the old Boston Garden a half-century ago, is a spotless one.

It went up a few years ago to hold the location where the NBA's greatest champions would mark their next title.

That banner will apparently remain blank another year. As soon as Sunday, the Celtics' quest for No. 18 could be over for this season.

Down 3-0 to the New York Knicks, the Celtics are thinking much smaller than another title when they host Game 4 on Sunday afternoon.

"You've got to focus on the single game. You can't win four without winning one," Boston coach Doc Rivers said Saturday.

Even that looks difficult for a Celtics team that can't get any offense going. Boston has averaged a feeble 75 points, not breaking 80 in any game, on 39.5 percent shooting.

No NBA team has overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series, as the Knicks know. They were swept by the Celtics two years ago and managed only to get to Game 5 after dropping the first three against Miami last year, when they ran their NBA-record postseason losing streak to 13 games.

Now Carmelo Anthony sees the Celtics in the same position he was in during his first two postseasons in New York, and he wants the sweep.

"To be honest with you, to accomplish that would be spectacular. It would be a dream come true. I've never swept anybody. But we know Game 4 is win or go home for them guys," Anthony said.

"I've been on that side of the ball plenty of times and I know that feeling, so I know the type of energy they're going to come out and display here on Sunday. We've just got to be prepared for the punches that they throw and everything they put out there on the basketball court."

There haven't been any punches, though the Celtics' Jason Terry did take an elbow from New York's J.R. Smith late in Game 3. Terry wouldn't comment on the play Saturday, but said he was annoyed by what he thought was some Knicks' showboating and is clearly agitated by what's gone on in the series.

"I mean, when you get your butt kicked like they've been doing to us the last week or so and you're seeing the same team every day, you're going to get tired of it. Or you're going to lay down. I'm tired of it," Terry said.

The Celtics haven't lost in the first round since 2005 and haven't been swept since Indiana beat them in the first round a year earlier.

They returned to prominence six years ago when they acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to team with Paul Pierce, and it's been a good run for the Celtics. They won a title in 2008, lost in a Game 7 to the Lakers two years later, and pushed Miami to seven games in last year's Eastern Conference finals.

But Allen then joined the Heat, and All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was lost to a knee injury around midseason. Garnett will turn 37 next month and Pierce is 35, and the Celtics have had opportunities to trade both of them. There may be more decisions in the offseason, so the end of this series could actually be the end of an era.

"I dread the end all the time. I really do," Rivers said. "I just like to be able to know when the end is, meaning you're in Game 7 of the world championship. Then you know you're playing for the end. I hate when the end can come early. But I dread them all."

Game 5 would be Wednesday, though the Knicks would prefer to wrap it up Sunday and give one of the oldest rosters in NBA history some extra rest before their first appearance in the second round since 2000.

"For sure," said point guard Raymond Felton. "Just like Melo said, I've been on the other end of the stick as well. I was in Charlotte, made the playoffs for the first time and we got swept by Orlando. So it feels good to be on the winning side. So if we could come out and definitely sweep this game, it would be something special for all of us. For me, for him, especially individually, and then on top of that we'd get a lot of rest. And hopefully Indiana and Atlanta can go to Game 7."

The Celtics believe they can turn things around with more effort, though their execution has been just as poor. Not even Pierce has been immune to their woes, missing a layup on the first possession of Friday's 90-76 loss and just fumbling the ball away on a couple of occasions later in the game.

But forward Jeff Green said his confidence is "still high," even if the Celtics' chances of advancing aren't.

"I mean, look at the guys on this team, guys who have been through so much throughout their career," he said. They've been down. I mean you have guys who are confident in their game and believe that we have a chance, and that's all that it takes."
