With all the hype about Social Media in recent years, it was perhaps inevitable that older forms of online communication such as email would take a drubbing in the media and be declared ?has beens?, kind of like the Mac?s increasing popularity vs. the PC: the new, cool thing replacing something only business people, nerds or your parents use.
?
Even the Wall Street Journal declared in a 2009 article ?Why Email No Longer Rules? that ?Email has had a good run as king of communications. But its reign is over.? The article?s writer continued: ?Email, stuck in the era of attachments, seems boring compared to services like Google Wave, which allows users to share photos by dragging and dropping them from a desktop into a Wave, and to enter comments in near real time?. Apparently, email has also become too slow nowadays: ?A couple of years ago, we?d complain about a half-hour delay in getting an email. Today, we gripe about it taking an extra few seconds for a text message to go through.? Forwarding pictures through email apparently is outdated too: ?In the old days, people shared photos over email. Now, they post them to Flickr and tag them with their location. That means users can, with little effort, search for an area, down to a street corner, and see photos of the place?. Ironically, that piece was the WSJ?s most emailed article of that day.
?
Even Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, named in Time magazine?s 2012 list of the 100 most influential people in the world and Business Week?s 2012 list of ?25 Most Influential People on the Web? , somewhat famously made this rather contradictory statement: ??E-mail?I can?t imagine life without it?is probably going away?, citing the fact only 11% of teens using email daily and hailing sites like (naturally) Facebook as the latest evolution of online communication.
Don?t believe the hype.? Email is still the #1 means of promoting your real estate business online.? I?ll explore the reasons why in upcoming articles in this series.
