Odd, because I had probably assumed that poetry only occurred among the semi-elite, and especially those of the enlightened democratic sort who would have been fighting against the Taliban. GENEVA (Reuters) - Indonesia went to the World Trade Organization on Monday to overturn anti-dumping duties imposed by the European Union in its first such complaint against the bloc since winning a WTO court challenge against the United States.
Indonesia wants to overturn EU anti-dumping duties on imports of Indonesian fatty alcohols, which are used in the chemicals industry, the WTO said. Such duties are imposed when a country thinks imports are priced at an unfair discount.
By demanding "consultations" with the EU, Indonesia has triggered the first stage in a trade dispute, which may escalate into an adjudication battle if not resolved within 60 days.
The case is the latest in a series of challenges in which big developing economies are hitting back at assertions that their exports are unfairly priced or subsidized. India, China and Brazil have all initiated disputes in the past four months.
Indonesia's last involvement in litigation ended in April when it won an appeal against a U.S. ban on the sale of clove-flavored cigarettes, most of which come from Indonesia, as well as other flavors such as cherry and cinnamon.
The U.S. law, which was intended to stop children smoking, was found to be discriminatory because it did not also target menthol cigarettes.
Indonesia has not been on the receiving end of trade litigation since 1996, the year after the WTO was created. But its own trade practices have come increasingly under fire, with the United States blaming it this year for putting up barriers to imports and Japan angry at its curbs on metals exports.
Both those countries, and the EU, have also raised questions in WTO committee meetings about Indonesia's "local content" rules for investments in telecoms and the energy sector, which they say unfairly discriminate against foreign firms.
Such questions sometimes escalate into trade disputes if not resolved by the answers raised in committee sessions, and if the complainants feel the WTO litigation system gives them a good chance of winning the dispute.

He lost his first table tennis match in four straight games on Saturday to North Korean Kim Song Nam. The experience lasted just a few minutes, beaten 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 in the knockout tournament before about 4,000 fans.

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, announced Friday they are donating $2.5 million to the campaign to defend Washington's same-sex marriage law.
With the gift, Washington United for Marriage has raised more than $5 million for its referendum campaign.
"It's a game changer for us," said campaign manager Zach Silk in Seattle. "It puts us in unique position to win."
But, his group is still the underdog, he said. In 32 previous elections nationally, same-sex advocates have lost. Silk said he believes the Washington election may be the turning point, thanks in part to the Bezos' donation.
"We're at a tipping point, and they really understand this is an historic moment, and they want to be on the right side of history and want to make history," he said.
Amazon publicly supported the law earlier this year, along with other prominent Pacific Northwest businesses, including Microsoft, Starbucks Corp. and Nike Inc.
Last month, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates each donated $100,000 to support the law.
Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said the Bezos' donation was a personal decision and that "Jeff and MacKenzie feel strongly about the issue."
Referendum 74 was certified for the November ballot in May after gay marriage opponents in the group Preserve Marriage Washington turned in more than 240,000 signatures. The referendum seeks to overturn the gay-marriage law signed in February by Gov. Chris Gregoire.
The same-sex marriage law was supposed to take effect June 7 but has been put on hold pending the November vote.
A "yes" vote on the referendum upholds the law, and a "no" vote overturns it.
Joseph Backholm, chairman of Preserve Marriage Washington, said that while he was surprised by the size of the donation, his campaign has always expected that it would be outspent by gay marriage supporters.
"We're optimistic about what's going to happen in the end," he said. "Jeff Bezos gets to vote just one time like everyone else in state. That's the great equalizer."
As of Friday, Preserve Marriage has raised just over $253,000, though Backholm said the group hopes to ultimately raise $4 million.
National groups like the Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage, which was involved in ballot measures that overturned same-sex marriage in California and Maine, have promised to help overturn the law.
Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Maryland legalized gay marriage this year as well, but that state also is poised to have a public vote this fall.
In Maine, voters will decide on an initiative to approve same-sex marriage three years after a referendum overturned a law passed by the Maine Legislature. And in Minnesota, voters will decide whether to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

Ever wondered whether your feline hails from eastern Asia or the eastern Mediterranean? No need to rack your brain anymore -- a geneticist has developed a cat ancestry test that will reveal your pet's lineage.
Leslie Lyons, who heads up Lyons' Feline Genetics Laboratory at the University of California, promises that her cat genome test will uncover whether your pet's parents or grandparents belong to one of 29 "major fancy breeds". So you can finally say for certain if yours really is a pure Abyssinian, or hold off on the bragging if its mother in fact engaged in a relationship with the local alley cat.
Anyone wanting to take advantage of the ?76 test just needs to order one online and send back a cheek swab sample using the cytological brushes (a cotton bud-pipe cleaner hybrid) supplied. Within ten to 15 days you will know whether you should be grooming or shunning your cat.
Lyons' lab isolates the DNA from the swab and tests for specific markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms), which it then uses to generate a profile. This is compared to a database of global cat profiles to see which race it shares the most variants with -- the eight regions that mixed or "random bred" cats (the most common type) originate from are Western Europe, South Asia, Egypt, Eastern Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, Iran/Iraq, India and East Asia (most breeds hail from the first four locations). Lyons collected most of the cat samples for the database while attending cat shows hosted by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), The International Cat Association (TICA) and others around the globe.
After determining its geographical origin the lab then goes deeper, comparing the DNA markers that determine what the cat looks like to 29 breeds (there are around 60, but the 29 are most common) to see if there are any similarities. Being US-based, the 29 common breeds chosen were derived from US "cat fancy registries" -- the CFA and TICA. The heritage of cats outside of the US, therefore, will be more difficult to trace as breeding strategies and their history differ across the globe. Genetic mutations -- or phenotypic traits -- that dictate signifiers such as fur colour or length will further help narrow down the animal's origins, since families of breed share characteristics.
The resulting lineage profile, the lab says, is more than 90 per cent accurate.
"A true random bred cat will not match to specific breeds and low match probabilities will not be reported," the lab warns. "If your cat is a true direct cross with a breed, having a true breed parent or grandparent, this test can detect this breed genetic contribution in your cat."
The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, of which Lyons' lab is a part, also tests for parentage and genetic diseases in alpacas, elks and yaks -- just in case your yak is wondering whether it has been adopted.

So far, Popfab has been shown doing a little printing during a brief video, but Moyer has promised a lot more to come, telling Core 77, "we also have toolheads working for vinyl cutting, milling and drawing," all of which promise to show up in subsequent episodes. The tool (which has other fans) has apparently already made its way around the world in the form of carry-on luggage, helping fulfill its creators desire to support "the nomadic designer" -- just a briefcase, a power source and a dream.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbian lawmakers will elect a new government, dominated by former nationalist allies of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic for the first time since the autocrat was ousted in a popular revolt in 2000.
The vote on Friday in the Serbian parliament is expected to be a formality as the coalition government of Prime Minister-designate Ivica Dacic has the majority needed for the election.
Dacic's Cabinet will include ministers from his own Socialist Party, from the nationalist Progressive Party of President Tomislav Nikolic and several smaller groups.
