The United States military could get an advantage on other militaries around the world with aircraft that can fly at hypersonic speeds, or those about 20-times the speed of sound, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency? (DARPA).
DARPA issued a press release this past week saying it has made advancements in hypersonic flight research and compared hypersonic flight to the breakthroughs in stealth technology the agency made in the 1970s.
"DoD"s hypersonic technology efforts have made significant advancements in our technical understanding of several critical areas including aerodynamics; aerothermal effects; and guidance, navigation and control, but additional unknowns exist," said Acting DARPA Director, Kaigham J. Gabriel, in the release.
However, the agency says more research is needed and it is seeking companies to work with it on trying to achieve an operating hypersonic flight system.
DARPA will host a Proposers' Day on Aug. 14 to detail the technical areas for which proposals are sought through an upcoming competitive broad agency announcement.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton is the largest single-site employer in Ohio with about 27,000 workers and has an estimated $5 billion economic impact on the regional economy.
The more contracts won by companies with local operations, the bigger the boost to the local economy from the air base.
