(AP) ? Geno Smith and the West Virginia Mountaineers played their first Big 12 game Saturday. They wasted no time reworking its record book.

Smith tied a conference mark with eight touchdown passes and threw for 656 yards to lead No. 9 West Virginia to a 70-63 win over No. 25 Baylor.

Smith outdueled Baylor's Nick Florence, who had a standout game of his own with 581 yards and five TDs.

How wild was it? Smith had more TD passes than incompletions (six).

The Bears' Terrance Williams set a Big 12 record with 314 yards receiving. The old mark was set minutes earlier by West Virginia's Stedman Bailey, who had 303 yards and a school-record five TDs.

Williams' 8-yard scoring catch brought Baylor (3-1) within 70-63 with 3:08 left.

But Dustin Garrison ran for 17 yards on third down and the Mountaineers (4-0) ran out the clock to snap Baylor's nine-game winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.

The teams combined for 1,507 yards of offense and 37 first downs. Six receivers had at least 100 yards receiving.

The record books were rewritten for the schools, the conference and the FBS as West Virginia made its Big 12 debut after moving over from Big East.

It also marked the most points scored in a game involving a team ranked in The Associated Press poll. The previous record of 124 was set in No. 12 Oklahoma's 82-42 win over Colorado in 1980.

The combined 19 touchdowns tied an FBS mark, last reached when Navy beat North Texas 74-62 in 2007. That matchup set the FBS record for most points in a regulation game at 136.

Baylor, meanwhile, tied an FBS mark for the most points scored by a losing team.

Among the other records, Smith set school marks for completions, yards and touchdown passes. He still doesn't have an interception this season.

Bailey and Tavon Austin became the first FBS teammates with 200 yards receiving since 2007.

West Virginia went ahead for good early in the third quarter, but Baylor almost always had an answer.

Austin made long touchdown grabs three minutes apart while Baylor punted and missed a long field goal. Smith stayed in a groove, throwing three passes of 45 yards or more in the third quarter alone. His 47-yarder to Bailey set up Andrew Buie's second short TD run for a 56-35 lead.

The way this game was going, though, no cushion seemed safe.

Williams caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Florence and, after Baylor's defense forced a rare punt, Florence's sneak brought the Bears within 56-49, and there was still 14:14 left.

But Bailey scored on TD grabs of 87 and 39 yards after that.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen talked at length about how impatient he got watching Maryland's offense run the clock down before each snap last week.

There was no chance of a slowdown from Baylor.

The teams scored on 10 of their final 13 possessions of the first half. Seven of those drives lasted under two minutes.

Smith completed a school-record 14 straight passes at one point. After a dropped pass, Smith completed 12 more in a row.

Smith's fourth TD pass came with 29 seconds left until halftime, but that was more than enough time for Florence. On second down he threw down the left sideline to Lanear Sampson, who juked two defenders and went 67 yards untouched to tie the score at 35-35.

The Mountaineers now must hope they can generate points before on the road when they head to No. 12 Texas and Texas Tech over the next two weeks.

Personal Storage Ottawa Helps Free Up Space in Your Home Or ...

When it comes to freeing up space in your home, you need a company that offers personal storage ottawa services. Getting affordable personal storage is important when your home is either too small or far too cluttered to be comfortable. Personal storage Ottawa units allow you to store all of those items in a safe and secure environment. You don't have to worry about anybody accessing these items, since you will be able to lock the storage unit so that nobody can get to it. There a lot of benefits to owning a personal storage unit, below you will find some of the items that are useful to be stored in these containers.

Yard equipment We don't often mow or clean up our yards, so storing yard equipment in a personal storage unit is a great opportunity. If you have a lot of machinery like weed whackers, lawnmowers, tremors and more, storing this in your personal storage unit gets it out of your home and away from your sight. The best part about it is that storage units aren't really that expensive. In general, a typical storage unit will be well under $100 per month. This allows you to save money and get all of your garden equipment stored safely and securely in a unit that you can access when you need it. Anytime that you go to clean your yard, you can simply drive down to your unit and pick up your items.

A spare car Believe it or not, storage unit facilities will actually let you store a spare car inside one of their containers. Lots of people have spare cars around their home, but this can really take away from the overall appeal of your home. If you have a spare car that just sits in your front yard or driveway, you can store that car in a storage unit so that you no longer have to see it anymore. Surely, you and your neighbors are going to appreciate this opportunity.

Antiques Antiques can be something that we want to hold onto for as long as possible. Storing these antiques somewhere that they're going to be safe is important so that you can one day sell them and get a return on investment. If you have lots of antique furniture or items in your home, rather than keeping them in the garage or sitting somewhere that they really don't belong, you can store them in a storage unit. It doesn't matter what type of antiques you own, storage units will accept whatever it is you want to bring into the facility.

Business supplies Often times, businesses will have far too many supplies in order to keep all of them at their place of business. Additionally, if you operate out of your home, it can be difficult to keep track of business supplies and organize them efficiently. If you'd like a place to store some of the things that you purchase for your business, a storage unit is a great opportunity to do so.

Yikes! Fish sports a penis with 4 hooks

A male fish from Mexico has some fearsome genitalia. Equipped with four hooks, the male's sex parts might allow him to grab onto a resistant female during mating, researchers say.

The freshwater llanos mosquitofish, or Gambusia quadruncus, was described this month in the Journal of Fish Biology by a team led by researcher Brian Langerhans of North Carolina State University. Langerhans explained that the male's hooked genitals may be a counter-response to the female's own defenses against undesirable mates.

"Typically, reproduction is more costly in females, so females favor ways of reducing mating with 'lower quality' males, but reproduction is cheap in males and so selection favors ways of mating with as many females as possible," Langerhans said in a statement.

Females of this species have evolved to have a big ball of tissue that blocks most of the genital pore. This means the female would have to deliberately allow the male to mate with her unless the male evolved a counter-response, Langerhans explained.

The four-hooked genitalia could help the males overcome resistance and latch onto a female's genital pore and deposit sperm inside her. (Fertilization in the Gambusia genus takes place inside the female's body and she gives birth to live young.)

Strange as it seems, such hooks aren't unheard of. Another new species (Phallostethuscuulong) that was recently discovered in Vietnam sports sex parts that jut out of its head and are equipped with a rod and a jagged hook to clasp the female during mating.

The researchers who described that fish in a July edition of the journal Zootaxa similarly said hooking onto his mate probably helps ensure the male's fertilization success. [ Image Gallery: Weird 'Penis Head' Fish ]

Langerhans also described another strange feature in the llanos mosquitofish. The females have a colorful spot on their anus that seems to indicate the location of the female's genital pore, reproductive status and species. The latter could reduce cross-breeding, Langerhans said.

"So it may be thatG. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids," he said in a statement.

Haunting photos of buildings long-forgotten

Photographer Matthew Christopher , Abandoned America, ?photographs abandoned sites across America.? He documents the lost history and soul of structures as varied as homes, steel plants and asylums.????

Reporter's notebook by Jane Derenowski, NBC News

Things sound different in a place where no one goes. ??

Words echo off walls in empty rooms. ?

Real or imagined creatures scurry through mysterious puddles. ?

Shadows fall in strange places.?

Time doesn?t stop in abandoned buildings, it just moves differently -- and before their ultimate demise, photographer Matthew Christopher is determined to document the life, purpose, and deterioration of these structures.

They aren't just brick and mortar, wood and windows -- Christopher believes the abandoned buildings dotting America?s landscape also have something of a soul. ?He wants us to remember our country?s neglected factories, schools, churches, and hospitals before they are gone forever.?

He started this project 10 years ago while working in the mental health field. ?Some of his first photographs were inside a deserted asylum. ?

Since then, he?s documented dozens of abandoned buildings across the country and presented their stories at galleries and on his website, abandonedamerica.us. ?The goal, he says, is to highlight the economic failures leading to their downfall and the social impact on communities fractured by the closing of these neighborhood mainstays.

Photographer Matthew Christopher , Abandoned America, ?explains his passion for taking pictures of abandoned sites across America. ?He documents the lost history and soul of structures as varied as homes, steel plants and asylums.?

We met recently at the partially deserted Holmesburg Prison near Philadelphia. ?It was eerie, but there was a certain beauty in the stillness and things left behind. ?Inside, it reminded me of a quote by French composer Claude Debussy who famously said, ?Music is the space between the notes.? The places Christopher photographs tell their stories with silence and extraordinary light ? the spaces between the life and death of a building.?

His pictures make me feel like someone told me a secret.?

Christopher is a thoughtful man, melancholy in his assessment of decay -- and I feel lucky he shared his art and technique with us. ?I am also grateful to NBC News photographer Bob Riggio for documenting our adventure inside a place almost no one goes.

BYOD, And Don't Forget Your Security | Business 2 Community

Are you amped that your workforce has gone mobile? Now you?ve got business in the moment, on the go, and in the palm of your hand.

However, the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement has exponentially increased the demands on IT organizations for security on a myriad of platforms.

Right now it?s critical to maximize potential and minimize risk, as employees use their own mobile apps regardless of compliance. Consider these stats listed in the white paper Enterprise Mobile Security: Rock Solid or At Risk?

  • 61% of workers use social networking services not supported by their IT departments
  • 43% chat on non-supported IM services
  • 26% employ their own online collaboration tools

What does this mean for the security of your business data?

The most obvious (and preventable) pitfall is that mobile devices are easy to lose or steal. A misplaced iPhone might cost $400. However, lost data could mean tarnished intellectual property and bad press ? the damage of which is unquantifiable. With approximately 70% of all enterprise data residing on a mobile device, this becomes an expensive problem. A compromised data breach runs about $258 per record for mobile devices.

With this in mind, organizations should strive to protect data, not devices.

According to Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of Ponemon Institute, only 53% of companies had a mobile policy in place. And, approximately 16% had a policy that encompassed the entire enterprise.

The building blocks for an effective mobile security strategy

Even though these steps seem obvious, these capabilities can mean the difference between a minor nuisance and an arduous lawsuit:

  • Mandatory password-based entry
  • Auto-lock
  • Remote wipe
  • Access to safe, quality apps that can be accessed based on roles and privileges

The key is to never be lulled into a false sense of security by a one-size-fits-all solution, because you can?t rely on technology alone. By developing sound policies, you can address your company?s specific needs, such as device standards, IT support, financial responsibilities, and legal implications.

Here are some areas that should be considered when creating your own BYOD policy:

  • Device Use: Define which devices will be allowed.
  • Authentication: Install digital certificates in devices and support end-to-end encryption through a VPN so you can track the user?s identity, device, and location.
  • Remote Wipe: Employ this if a device is lost or stolen ? or if an employee leaves the company.
  • User Data: Specify who owns and controls what data.
  • Apps: Provide employees with a list of apps that are allowed ? as well as those that can?t be used.
  • Approval Procedure: Offer a procedure for approving new devices and apps in a rapidly changing mobile environment.

For optimal mobile security, organizations have to combat both internal and external threats. They must also accept that there is no perfect solution, and strategies need to evolve with technology. Now more than ever before, it?s expected that organizations incorporate numerous security tools, but never lose sight of the human factor.

Share and Enjoy

The 2012 National Solar Tour - Solar Feeds

Once a year solar owners across the US come together and allow the public to tour their homes, businesses and solar and energy efficient buildings. That time is now. And this year there?s an added bonus, a sweepstakes with nearly $4,000 in prizes! While officially the National Solar Tour takes place on Oct. 6, 2012, depending on where people live in the U.S. (and actually across the world), the tour could be taking place on a different day. Either way, as an added incentive for attending a local tour participants can register for the National Solar Tour Sweepstakes as part of the 17th annual National Solar Tour. The grand prize of the sweepstakes is a $2,500 gift certificate to a home improvement store. Second prize is a $1,000 gift certificate. And three, third place prizes will consist of Goal Zero Guide Plus solar-powered mobile battery charging kits, according to the American Solar Energy Society (ASES), which puts on the annual event. To enter into the contest people can go to the ASES site here or by scanning QR codes in the tour. The tour is an opportunity for people interested in going solar to check out how others in their community have done it. And homeowners and installers are on hand to discuss the installation process, how the system or systems work (some homes or buildings have additional renewable energy features like solar hot water, heating and cooling, wind, geothermal heating and cooling, superinsulation or other features) that make the buildings stand out and more sustainable. The tour has grown in size and popularity each year. ?More than 5,000 building owners open their doors for the tour this fall, in nearly every state and in every climate, from the sunny Southwest to the snowy Northeast,? said David Hill, chair of ASES? Board of Directors. ?We expect more than 160,000 people to tour the open-house buildings this fall. Tour visitors have dedicated the better part of a Saturday to see what their neighbors are doing with solar power.? This year over 3,200 communities will host solar tours. Some started as early as Sept. 22, but the majority will occur this and next weekend. For instance, the Denver Area Sustainable Living Tour and the 2012 Coconino County Sustainable Building and Water Conservation Tour take place this Saturday. Meanwhile the Green Energy Ohio Tour runs from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7, as do some others. If you?re interested in participating in a local tour, you can see where a tour is happening near you by clicking here.

Student debt stretches to record 1 in 5 households

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With college enrollment growing, student debt has stretched to a record number of U.S. households ? nearly 1 in 5 ? with the biggest burdens falling on the young and poor.

The analysis by the Pew Research Center found that 22.4 million households, or 19 percent, had college debt in 2010. That is double the share in 1989, and up from 15 percent in 2007, just prior to the recession ? representing the biggest three-year increase in student debt in more than two decades.

The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn. The biggest jumps occurred in households at the two extremes of the income distribution. More well-off families are digging deeper into their pockets to pay for costly private colleges, while lower-income people in search of higher-wage jobs are enrolling in community colleges, public universities and other schools as a way to boost their resumes.

Because of the sluggish economy, fewer college students than before are able to settle into full-time careers immediately upon graduation, contributing to a jump in debt among lower-income households as the young adults take on part-time jobs or attend graduate school, according to Pew.

As a share of household income, the debt burden was the greatest for the poorest 20 percent of households, or those making less than $21,044. In all, 40 percent of U.S. households headed by someone younger than age 35 owed college debt, the highest share of any age group.

"Comparing the debt to their economic resources, the lowest-income fifth of households are the ones experiencing the greatest stresses," said Richard Fry, a senior economist at Pew who analyzed the numbers.

Noting that college enrollment has continued to climb since 2010, Fry added: "Until college enrollment peaks, I would not expect the amount of outstanding student debt to level off."

The study released Wednesday is based on the Survey of Consumer Finances, conducted every three years and sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The numbers are as of 2010, the latest available for that survey. Separate Fed data have pointed to subsequent increases in student loans since 2010 that totaled $914 billion in the April-June quarter, but don't provide demographic breakdowns on who shoulders the biggest burdens.

Both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger in this year's election, Mitt Romney, have been seeking to court young voters with differing visions on how to address rising tuition and growing college debt. Obama wants to make tax credits for college expenses permanent and expand Pell grants for lower-earning families. Romney says that making government the direct source of federal student loans has not worked and simply drives tuition higher. He stresses the need to curb college costs.

The Pew report found that the richest 20 percent of households, or those with annual income of $97,586 or higher, owed the biggest share of outstanding student debt ? 31 percent, up from 28 percent in 2007. The poorest 20 percent of households also saw their debt grow, to 13 percent from 11 percent.

The richest households saw significant increases in per-household debt. For those with annual income of $97,586 to $146,791, college debt rose from $25,921 in 2007 to $31,989. For the richest 10 percent, making at least $146,792, college debt increased from $36,033 to $44,810.

Across all households, the average outstanding college debt increased from $23,349 to $26,682. For the poorest 20 percent of households, the average debt rose from $19,018 to $20,640.

In recent years, Americans have cut back on several other types of borrowing such as credit card use, with average household indebtedness falling from $105,297 in 2007 to $100,720 in 2010. Broken down by income levels, however, average total indebtedness for the bottom 20 percent of households by income actually rose from $17,579 in 2007 to $26,779; for the higher income groups, average indebtedness either was unchanged or declined.

RIM delivers pleasant surprise to investors; shares surge

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd reported a narrower-than-expected loss on Thursday and the struggling BlackBerry maker bolstered its cash reserves, sparking optimism ahead of the launch of its make-or-break line of next-generation smartphones.

Shares of the RIM surged 20 percent in after-hours trade on indications the company will have plenty of cash to ramp up production of its new BlackBerry 10 devices and mount a robust marketing campaign for the revamped line, due in early 2013.

It was the biggest jump for the stock since a 50 percent surge in December 2003, underlining the importance of the BB10 launch. The company, which has fallen far behind its rivals in the smartphone market it once dominated, has staked its future on the BB10 and its completely redesigned operating system.

RIM's second fiscal quarter brought shareholders additional glimmers of hope, a break from a succession of dreadful quarterly reports. The company not only generated more revenue than Wall Street had forecast but it topped expectations on the number of devices shipped in the period, which ended September 1.

"It's very impressive," said Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek. "I didn't expect they could execute on the business given the models they have in the market, but they obviously did really well in emerging markets."

A one-time smartphone pioneer, RIM has failed to keep pace with rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co, and its stock price has tumbled about 70 percent over the past year while its market share shriveled.

But the latest quarter showed that RIM is still able to lure buyers for its lower-end devices in more price-conscious emerging markets. That has helped make up for ground the BlackBerry has lost to cutting-edge devices such as Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III in North America and Europe.

"RIM and its products, however obsolescent, are still relevant in the parts of the planet where most people live," said CCS Insight analyst John Jackson. "The bad news is that these results have little or no bearing on what remains true, and that is, RIM still needs to execute on BB10."

In an attempt to create a buzz, Chief Executive Thorsten Heins gave a preview of the new smartphone and its features to app developers at an event on Tuesday in San Jose, California.

Analysts said RIM struck the right chords at the event but cautioned that it is hard to evaluate how well the BB10 devices will work in real world conditions until they are on the market.

"We are now just a few months away from our launch and our teams are working night and day to meet the expectations we have of ourselves," said Heins on a conference call after the results were released on Thursday.

Heins said RIM executives have met with dozens of carriers in more than 16 countries in the last few weeks and the feedback on the new devices so far, has been overwhelmingly positive.

QUARTERLY RESULTS

Shipments of BlackBerry smartphones were 7.4 million in the quarter, easily outpacing Wall Street's expectation of about 6.9 million shipments in the period.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company reported a net loss of $235 million, or 45 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter. That compared with a profit of $329 million, or 63 cents, in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding one-time restructuring-related items, the loss came in at $142 million, or 27 cents a share, in the quarter just ended.

Revenue rose to $2.9 billion, or 2 percent from the fiscal first quarter, but the latest result was down about 30 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Analysts, on average, had expected RIM to reported a loss of 46 cents a share, on revenues of $2.5 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"You still have revenue declining 31 percent on a year-over-year basis but it's certainly not the train wreck that a lot of people feared," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "They live to fight another day."

CASH PILE

RIM increased its cash to about $2.3 billion from $2.2 billion in the fiscal first quarter.

"They also lost a lot less money than expected, and the cash balance, even though they lost money, they were able to grow it slightly," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.

Having sufficient cash on hand is seen as crucial to a successful launch of the BB10 line, as RIM will have to pour significant amounts of capital into marketing the devices.

RIM's chief financial officer said the company had entered into a new secured credit facility of $500 million which expires in September 2013, and in the first half RIM realized some $350 million of the up to $1 billion in cost savings it hopes to achieve in fiscal 2013.

The company, which earlier this year said it would cut about 5,000 jobs in a move to save money, said it has already laid-off roughly 2,500 workers.

"It's still bad, but it's a much smaller disaster than expected," said Wu. "These stocks all trade on expectations. Expectations were really low, and they were able to beat that."

RIM's U.S.-listed shares surged 20 percent to $8.55 in trade after the closing bell on Thursday.

'Semi-dwarf' trees may enable a green revolution for some forest crops

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The same "green revolution" concepts that have revolutionized crop agriculture and helped to feed billions of people around the world may now offer similar potential in forestry, scientists say, with benefits for wood, biomass production, drought stress and even greenhouse gas mitigation.

Researchers at Oregon State University recently outlined the latest findings on reduced height growth in trees through genetic modification, and concluded that several advantageous growth traits could be achieved for short-rotation forestry, bioenergy, or more efficient water use in a drier, future climate.

This approach runs contrary to conventional wisdom and centuries of tree breeding, which tried to produce forest trees that grow larger and taller, the researchers note. But just as the green revolution in agriculture helped crops such as wheat and rice produce more food on smaller, sturdier plants, the opportunities in forestry could be significant.

"Research now makes it clear that genetic modification of height growth is achievable," said Steven Strauss, an OSU professor of forest genetics. "We understand the genes and hormones that control growth not only in crop plants, but also in trees. They are largely the same."

In a study published in Plant Physiology, researchers inserted a number of genes into poplar trees, a species often used for genetic experiments, and valuable for wood, environmental and energy purposes. They described 29 genetic traits that were affected, including growth rate, biomass production, branching, water-use efficiency, and root structure. All of the changes were from modified gibberellins, plant hormones that influence several aspects of growth and development.

The range and variation in genetic modification can be accurately observed and selected for, based on hormone and gene expression levels, to allow production of trees of almost any height.

For example, for ornamental purposes it would be possible to grow a miniature poplar, or even a Douglas-fir, as a potted plant.

And because height growth, in competition for sunlight, is a primary mechanism that trees use to compete for survival, there would be reduced concern about use of such genetically modified trees in a natural environment. On a long-term basis they would be unable to compete, shaded by larger trees and ultimately they would die out.

Scientists could also produce trees that might have a larger root mass, which should make them more drought-resistant, increase water use efficiency, increase elimination of soil toxins and better sequester carbon. This could be useful for greenhouse gas mitigation, bioremediation or erosion control.

Smaller trees could also be selected that have sturdier trunks for some uses in short-rotation plantation forestry, significantly reducing the number of trees blown down by wind. And shorter, thicker and straighter trunks might create higher-value wood products in many tree species, Strauss said.

Some semi-dwarf trees produced by conventional tree breeding techniques are already an important part of the horticulture industry, allowing easier harvesting of fruit and higher yields. Genetic modification could add new characteristics and more scientific precision to the process, researchers said.

"The main limitation is the onerous regulatory structure for genetically-modified plants in the United States," Strauss said. "Even short, safe and beneficial trees are unlikely to be able to bear the high costs and red tape inherent to obtaining regulatory approval."

This research has been supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, and industry members of the Tree Biosafety and Genomics Research Cooperative at OSU.

?

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. ? Nearly 50 of the 100 or more animals seized in Person County on Tuesday will be transported to Greensboro to receive medical treatment for starvation, abuse and neglect.

?

A statement issued Tuesday by the Humane Society of the United States said the Person County Sheriff?s Office served a search and seizure warrant on the property in Rougemont.

?

Area organizations helped local animal control and rescued 39 horses and nearly 70 small-breed dogs, cats and birds kept at the property

The horses were described as very thin. Some are suffering from medical issues that require immediate attention.

The dogs and cats were kept in unsanitary housing and many are afflicted with eye infections, skin infections and other signs of severe neglect.

The owner surrendered the animals. They will be taken to area shelters for immediate evaluation and treatment by veterinarians.

Enhancements That Increase Safety In Your Home | Furniture Cowboy

Renovation is such a broad subject. As it offers such a large selection of options, renovation can seem a bit frightening and overpowering. The majority may think they need a contractor to do these seemingly time consuming, most unlikely tasks. The thing is: you can do it yourself! This text is focused on teaching you how to complete simple, everyday home improvements by yourself, no contractor necessary. Before very long, you'll be so savvy in house repair, all your pals will be knocking on your door for some assistance with their houses!

Furnace

When thinking about home improvements, think green! It?s a great way to add value as well as to be environmentally friendly. Putting in an energy-efficient furnace or air conditioning won?t only make your living space more comfy, but also save you money and keep the earth cleaner longer.

To circulate the air in your home, install ceiling fans in your most-used rooms. The fans can reduce your dependency on the air conditioner in the summer and they can push warm air downward in the winter, making your furnace use more efficient. Most fans can switch directions to draw air upward or push it downward, depending on your wishes.

When choosing who to help with a home-improvement project you are going to need to work out what type of help you require. A contractor can help with specific upgrades like replacing a furnace or moving ductwork. A specialty contractor can work on your kitchen or your toilet, but typically not both. A renovator or general contractor can cover more than one project at one previous point.

Here's a great home improvement idea! Ensure that your whole system (furnace, heat pump, air conditioner) is energy efficient. Leaky channels can lower the overall energy efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as twenty p.c. Duct sealing increases potency and lowers your utility bills.

When replacing your furnace filter, remember that electrostatic pleated filters may lead to your furnace to run harder than it would with a filter which has bigger spaces for air to go through. If you do use pleated allergen-reducing filters, make sure you change them frequently, because air cannot flow through them easily when they're blocked up by dirt and waste.

If you heat with a wood burning stove, smoke will cause your walls to become grubby and you will need to repaint more frequently than if you heat with a furnace. When you do re-paint, it is sensible to wipe the walls and ceiling down with a moist sponge to get rid of as much soot as practical before putting on a new coat of paint.

See? That wasn?t so gruelingly hard, was it? While home improvement could seem like it is something you should pay someone else to do, you are able to save money and do it yourself! The do-it-yourself tips located in body of this article explain exactly how to do it, all the while making your tasks fun and easy. While following the tips provided in this piece, your home is on its way to being the talk of the town, in a good way!

These home improvement tips are brought to you by the leader in Air Conditioning Denver service. Call HVAC Denver if you have questions on any of these home improvement tips.

3Taps Files Antitrust Action Against Craigslist - NYTimes.com

Craigslist may be the world?s largest listings Web site, but after knocking down developers who try to build services on top of the Web site, it may also one of the least liked.

On Monday, 3Taps, a company that collects public data and organizes it for developers to use, filed an antitrust claim against Craigslist, accusing the company of anticompetitive business practices.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Federal District Court for Northern California in San Francisco, is a response to Craigslist?s lawsuit in July that accused 3Taps and Padmapper, a listings Web site, ?of infringing on Craigslist?s copyright and trademark.

Last month, in a Disruptions column, I noted that Craigslist had killed access to dozens of small Web sites and services that had tried to build products on top of the company?s listings. The developers and companies were sent stern cease-and-desist letters by Craigslist?s law firm, Perkins Coie.

Craigslist and its chief executive, Jim Buckmaster, did not respond to a request for comment.

In 3Tap?s lawsuit, which also answered questions posed by Craigslist in its suit, 3Taps said that although accomplishments by Craigslist were commendable, its dominance over classified listing was stifling innovation and hurting consumers.

?As Craigslist spends heavily to bully and intimidate companies that challenge them, consumers are deprived of better ways to find and execute real-time exchange transactions,? said Greg Kidd, the founder and chief executive of 3Taps, in a news release issued with the filing. ?Craigslist uses its monopoly position to achieve huge annual profits without sinking any meaningful costs into research and development or innovation,? he said.

3Taps is one of the few companies to stand up to Craigslist. Many developers have criticized Craigslist for bullying smaller developers that do not have the resources to defend themselves.

?The basis of our antitrust counterclaim and defense against Craigslist?s baseless lawsuit is simple: public facts are public property ? openly and equally available to all businesses and consumers.? Mr. Kidd said in the release. ?Sham copyright claims and unenforceable terms of use cannot stand when they deceive users, intimidate innovators, or thwart a competitive marketplace.?

Medicare Bills Rise As Records Turn Electronic

My impression is that the US health care system has been doing this for as long as it has existed. Having digital records should be a great help to the insurance companies to make it easier to track down fraudulent health care providers.

Since I live in Sweden I don't usually have a problem with health care bills, but once during a vacation to the US I had to visit a hospital due to severe stomach pain. Four hours and a trip through the CT machine later I was released with a prescription for some pills. Six months later (back home in Sweden) a bill for $14000 arrives...

When I brought this to my insurance company and explained that the examination I went through couldn't possibly have cost that much they just shrugged and said "yeah, they always try this when dealing with foreign insurance companies". A few weeks later they had everything settled at just under $3000.

So what's the point of this story? If a system is open to exploitation you need someone to monitor it. Monitoring is easier with good records of what's been going on.

Some Chinese people are rich, but China as a whole... - An Economist's Perspective
Some Chinese people are rich, but China as a whole is unbelievably short on many of the things that qualify countries as fully developed. Shanghai has about the same climate as Washington, D.C.?and its public schools have no heating. (Go to a classroom when it?s cold, and you?ll see 40 children, all in their winter jackets, their breath forming clouds in the air.) Beijing is more like Boston. On winter nights, thousands of people mass along the curbsides of major thoroughfares, enduring long waits and fighting their way onto hopelessly overcrowded public buses that then spend hours stuck on jammed roads. And these are the showcase cities! In rural Gansu province, I have seen schools where 18 junior-high-school girls share a single dormitory room, sleeping shoulder to shoulder, sardine-style. ?
