Everyone knows the Orioles haven?t played in the postseason in 15 years. They know that only one day remains until the team?s biggest series in years begins.
Times like these are rare and special for the Orioles. Over the last 30 years, they?ve only been true contenders this late in the season six times. Three times they qualified for postseason play. Three times they didn?t.
On Sept. 6, 1997, the Orioles won their third of four games against Yankees. That gave them a 9 ? game lead in the AL East. They won the division by a deceptively close two games.
The year before, the Orioles were 10 games out of first place early in August. They didn?t play the Yankees at home in the last two months, and lost two of three at Yankee Stadium in late September. They qualified as a wild card anyway.
Twenty years ago, the Orioles trailed Toronto by 1 ? games on Sept. 7, lost three to the Buck Showalter-managed Yankees and were home for October. Many fans have compared this Orioles team with the 1989 one. That group was in first place by 7 ? games in mid-July. In late September, they lost two of three to the Yankees and two crucial games in Toronto in the season?s last series.
In 1983, when they won the World Series, they pulled away, leading the AL East by 8 ? with 12 games remaining.
Thirty years ago, the Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers, who were then in the American League finished the season with a four-game series at Memorial Stadium. The Orioles trailed by three. They won the first three to set up a defacto playoff game on Sunday, but lost.
That series was considered the most unforgettable in Baltimore baseball history. Another one may be approaching.
