India to propose direct flights between New Delhi, Islamabad

India will propose direct flights between New Delhi and Islamabad in the talks between the commerce secretaries of India and Pakistan, expected to be held in mid-September this year, after the two countries? external affairs ministers have met, said S R Rao, Commerce Secretary, Government of India, in a report by Asit Ranjan Mishra in the Mint. Currently, the two capitals are not connected by direct flights. Only Karachi and Mumbai are connected by direct flights. If Pakistan agrees, Rao hopes a joint working group involving the aviation ministry officials of both countries will be constituted.

Rao said that one of the reasons why the meeting scheduled for May this year could not be held is that some members of the Pakistan government felt that other aspects of the dialogue between the two countries on issues such as Siachen and Sir Creek should take place. ?With Pakistan, the primary objective is not getting a larger market access, but bridging the trust deficit,? he said.
